I always love that swirly look. That's using a drill press and a wire attachment, yes? Lemme know how you did that as I want to do that on my next one...

Familiar sight, the fun part, components mounted.
Yes its wire brushed, its a simple linear pattern, like mud'in a ceiling.

I hope you clear coated the metal after you swirled it.
Looks nice!
What are you building?

Nice job it appears to be a Fender Deluxe build to me?
Re: build as you go
Please explain why this is necessary....rust inhibition? I'd really like to know, as I wouldn't have thought to do that....Structo wrote:I hope you clear coated the metal after you swirled it.

Yes if the metal is mild steel it will oxidize. (rust)
So if you want to keep the pretty swirls, you can spray either a clear lacquer over it or some other poly clear coat to preserve it.
Not on the inside of course where you need to get to bare metal for grounding.

Oil wipe off, If it gets bad I'll remember the clear coat, mild steel.
Aluminum is fun for the finish, there's always a bi- metallic issues.
It's still fun and easy, but if it rusts I'll know better.
fender generic replacements, 50W, cathode bias, cathodyne inverter.
Real simple but with a few tricks.

Cool. Thanks.
So, if I did this to an aluminum chassis would I need to coat it as well? I have an aluminum chassis that I'd like to do this to...

Nah, aluminum is not a ferrous metal. Safe!
As mentioned above, you get a bi-metallic thing anywhere 2 metals contact. White fuzzy furs.

Not necessarily - if you like au-natur-al...
As soon as you scratch aluminum it starts to Oxidise and make a protective skin/coat for-it-self. Like self healing.
But if you did want to lacquer it, then a stanfard type lacquer wouldn't adhere to it - it would flake off.
Aluminum is usually Etched when coated with Primers, etc. So I'd look for an Etching type Lacquer --- there are two part epoxies, too.
Re: build as you go
Not sure about that I have painted many alumuinum pedal enclosures over the years using several different types of paints and clear coats.
I just make sure they are clean and degreased, and paint them.

I did that to my 18W chassis (aluminum). Mine didn't come out as uniform as Andy's (nice work, Andy). I think I did give it a light spray of clear lacquer, if I recall.
