Music Man 65 - rebuild , mod or depart?

Post by Aurora »

I'm about to aquire a Music Man 2100-65 in so-so condition.
Stripped of Tolex, 'cause someone had sprayed the original.....
Imported from US - so I'll need a new PT for 230V.
Otherwise- any suggestions? Rebuild it to original? What's your opinions on this amp?
Keep it or maybe depart with it to build a Dumble clone, or mod it towards a OD 50 W?
The original output section is quite hot, as is....

Because they have a SS preamp section, I don't think it is a candidate for modding to a more Dumble like amp.
That also makes it less likely that you will find a PT for it.
Music Man amps have windings for the SS part that you won't find on common Fender or Hammond replacement transformers.
They are decent amps, in their own right, so I'd find an external transformer to convert 230V down to 120, retolex it and enjoy.

Its the RD-50 that has an extra 12ax7 in the pre. These are very unique amps.
They are a hybrid with a tube power side, but its how the 6CA7's are implemented
in the circuit. They appear to me to a grounded grid setup. The cathode are
signal driven, the control grid is maintained at a positive bias (16 v), the
screen and plate are at 350v and 700v respectively, and the suppressor is
grounded. It "looks" like a class B set up I've seen for HI-FI based on the
Stromeyer "dynamic-coupled" circuit, by a Richard Modafferi, audioXpress 4/02.

Anyway, its not your typical amp, it won't be familiar to most techs.
Leo Fenders parting gift. Ive been wanting to get inside for a long time but
just cant find one in the area. Clean it up and use an external tranny to step the volts.

Euro PTs are available- no problem there.
As for a possible mod - I guess I'd have to rip out the SS pre and put something else in.... or just rebuild it and sell it for cash to buy new parts...
As I am no guitar expert myself, I really don't have any strong opinions about this amp...?

These amps make excellent Dumble's. In fact Dumble used MM iron for some of his amps. Gut it and build a Dumble in there, you won't be sorry.

Remember that these amps have very high B+ so you'll need to keep the screen voltage down. Check the Dumble files section, I believe there's a MM conversion there.

Have a look at http://www.musicmanamps.com/ - lots of info in the forum and schematics. I think there's 2 versions of the 2100-65 the later one is all solid state with a tube power amp, and the earlier is a solid state preamp with tube PI (a 7025) and tube power amp. You cant mod it like the RD amps which have a tube in the distortion channel though. The Clapton mods might suit for a bit more oomph from the preamp. I think the 2100-65s are great sounding clean amps with a nice gentle breakup when driven. Rebuild it or gut it? Its up to you - either way it'll sound good :D J

I'd start with the PT, play it a bit and if it doesn't work for you turn it into the hotrod dejour'.

I'd get a step transformer play it if you liked it then buy a power transformer if not sell it back to the states. It's not the amp to MOD.
