Point to Point wiring
I've got this old Stromberg Carlson PA amp, and I'd like to gut it and build something fun into it.

It runs a pair of 6550s, coupla rectifiers, and 4 preamp tubes, so I've got some juice to work with. I thought I might try a Route 66 or maybe an express. The problem is that due to the way the chassis is laid out I don't think I could realistically get a main board in there.
I'd like to try this point to point. Problem is, I can't find anything anywhere about how to go about it. I will probably keep the heaters wired pretty much as they already are and work around that.
Does anyone know of any good resources, print or online, that would help me figure this layout thing out? I suppose if I went the 'wreck route there are a few people that have done that, but in my case, I'm constrained by the existing chassis, transformer/tube placement, etc.
I'm also open to other suggestions as far as what else might be cool to build into this chassis.
I'm really only set on something with no MV that will growl pretty good without a pedal (save maybe a clean boost).

Thanks mark! I will have to do that. Got a drummer pal who agreed to start playing as long as I can pick him up (we'd have to haul drums every time at least for now) so I'll have to pick up that amp soon anyway. What books would those be?M Fowler wrote:Ben,

Re: Point to Point wiring
I realize (i didn't say much about transformers specs, and that does make a difference.
Transformer has these taps:
100V (bias)
6.3V @ 4.2A (heaters)
5V @ 3A (5U4GB heater)
5V @ 2A (5Y3GT heater)
430V (HV)
The 430V actually ends up being about 445 at the primaries, with the amp fired up.
Say I were to try an express. How would I go about modifying the PS to work with this transformer?

Vol. I, II, III from Tony something or another is loaded with point to point layouts, turret board layouts, eyelet layouts and terminal strip layouts of various types of circuits.
I can't remember his last name, Zilato maybe?

I haven't done point to point for many years but I bought a batch of turret strips and plan to build some single ended amps for my kids. I picked up a tranny set for the Swamp Thing and will began on that after my last project is done.
I will use Tony Zottola's concept or methodology of making a list and checking each component off one at a time. If you look at the schematic there is a natural line on each showing the points to ground, try arange your tube sockets and strips in such a way to utilize that. Gets confusing unless you built one of Tony's many projects. In case you people are wonder he includes plans for:
Vol 1 Sonac MA1; All American 4; Champ AA764; Deluxe 5C3 octal; and Old Bassman octal.
Vol 2 Deluxe 5E3; Bassman 5F6A; AC Top Boost; Lead 1959; and Twin Reverb.
Vol 3 AC15; 18 watt; Princeton Reverb AA1164; EH150; and DR103.
