I have everything I need to build the "Donna" ROCKET sans tubes, head cab, speakers and speaker cab. Next step is speakers. What do you...the Tone Sages have to say on this subject?
2X12?
2X10?
1X12?
What differs between a 10 and a 12?
Any favorite brands and models?
What if money was not a limiter? Are there special speakers you would own?
I found this guy in Cal that makes a decent cab...thoughts???

Re: Speakers/Cabinets and advice
my favorite is a 2 x 12 closed back.
Of all the cabinets I have had, my favorite, and the only one that never gets rotated in and out of my inventory, is a Marshall model 1936 2x12 cabinet. It is a bit larger than most cab for 2 - 12's (but not as big as a 4 x 12). It just seems to have something that I really like. I don't know if I can put a finger on it. Maybe better definition in the low end? A crisp, tight, punchy sound? I dunno. All I know is I sold a lot of other cabs without much thought but never considered getting rid of this one. And the thing is, it is loaded with plain old G12-75T speakers. Definitely not boutique! Someday when I have some extra money I would like to try some better speakers in it and see what happens.

Re: Speakers/Cabinets and advice
ok so I searched this site for "speaker" and noticed that you guys covered this subject well. I apologize for not doing my homework. I like that search function however...

You won't find a better sounding speaker than a Scumback.

If money is no object.
Jim the owner would also be most helpful in the design of a cabinet as well.

Re: Speakers/Cabinets and advice
Eminence make great speakers...and they are made in the USA...
You want a good 12" to cut through when playing lead?
Get a 12" Patriot Screaming Eagle...
I have a 12" Eminence Patriot Red White and Blues...a 12" Eminence Red Coat Private Jack...and a 12" Eminence Delta Pro...
They are all 8 ohm, each has it's own open back cab on rollers and they all sound different and good.

Wow...thanks very much! You'll find my adjustable back cabs here (click on the pics of them to see the adjustable back feature and how it works): http://www.southbayampworks.com/cabinets.htmlbillyz wrote:You won't find a better sounding speaker than a Scumback.

I'm working with a new cab maker who builds them for me in about 3-4 weeks now, although I'm back to covering them myself.
The good news is that a custom design one-off is a bunch easier, so if there's a need for a different width or height, that's not a dealbreaker.
My regular 2x12 adjustable back design covers most of the territory for open, partially open, barely open to fully closed quite easily, though, so that might work well for you. But if you have an "idea" you need something else, shoot me an email.
Scumback Speakers had to be moved to this site per the IRS last year (bastids):

They don't think an amp and amp cabinet company is directly affiliated to a guitar amp speaker company....yeah...go figure. That's the government for you.
Thanks very much, billyz. I'm guessing you got your (free and blown) H75 rebuilt and it's working ok?
