Am I gonna blow this up?

Post by stompjunkie »

A buddy of mine dropped a 70W ultralinear Pro Reverb off with me to look over for him. It had no cap can cover, and even worse it has two humungous sprague caps 220uf @ 500v dangling pretty far down. They're in the perfect place for him to grab when he's turning the amp on/off. Fun. So, I have a cover, but those caps have to go.... the schematic shows two 220uf @ 285v caps. I've got 2 f&t 300v caps that should do just fine. Here's the problem.... I measured the voltage across the dangling caps and from their +'s to ground and got almost 520v. Would you swap out for the F&T? Has there been something else done to this amp that I didn't notice at first? I don't want to give it back and have him die from touching the wrong thing, but I also don't wanna blow up his new piece...... Any help is appreciated. Thanks.....

Fender used two 350 volt caps in series to arrive at a 700 volt capacity. Caps in series add voltage ratings and divide capacitance. The typical Fender setup is 100 microfarads each which divides to give 50 microfarads for the first filter stage.

The P.O. probably went 220 microfarads @ 500 volts 'cuz that's what he had. If they're wired correctly you should have around 100 microfarads @ 1000 volts, fine 'n' dandy. Except... I'll bet the cap can is AWOL 'cuz those big bastards wouldn't fit under it.
