Yellow Jackets

I think that they use zeners and such to drop voltage on the plate and grid. IMHO they are just as e-rex said: novel. I have tried a similar approach with many a lower voltage tube in a higher voltage amp and the results were really a learning experience. YMMV

Doesn't this belong to another thread?
Anyways, I figure YJ just isolate any fixed DC bias and cathode bias the tubes into a safe class A region of operation.
Any comments?

ZD is right - well, you're both right. They do isolate the tube from the amp's bias, and they do drop plate & screen voltages to more EL84 - friendly levels.

I've heard them sound good in a friend's JCM 800 (damn fool sold the 800 and the YJs  ), but like somebody said in the other thread I just cant seem to get 'em to make any bass. IIRC, there are a few differences in circuitry between the output section of an '800 vs a '900, so maybe that explains the difference in performance.

I will continue to play around with them till I have to give 'em back. FWIW, the other differences I noticed are that the pentode/triode switch seems to have much more effect when using them vs EL34s, and that the NOS tubes sound more articulate than the russian tubes that came with them (nowhere near enough better to justify the price, tho!)
