Tweed Deluxe inspired thing

Post by Colossal »

Hello friends:

I am building a variation on the Tweed Deluxe theme, taking elements of it that I like, and eliminating others that I don't want to use this time around (interactive controls). The amp will have a paralleled input stage, running into the Volume and (maybe) Tone control, into a second stage, cathodyne PI, and output. The cathodyne will be modified to something similar to Dumble's Tweedle D. I plan to use the second Volume control which would otherwise serve the Instrument/Normal channel as a Master going into the PI. That may or may not be useful, but it's a use for that knob, given the topology.

I wanted to solicit input from the group as to where to place the Tone control. It can be connected to the first Volume pot, between V1ab and V2a, or, it can be connected to the master volume, on the way into the PI. From the build perspective, it would of course be convenient to tack the Tone control to the second Volume (the master) as it is physically located next that pot on the chassis face. However, there may also be some utility to rolling off some high end between the first stages. The 18W/Tweed tone control is fairly low insertion loss.

The amp will also have some other small voicing changes to my preference, and as I said, it's a variation on the Tweed Deluxe theme, not a Tweed Deluxe clone.

Thanks.

Any thoughts but you seem to be one of the most knowledgeable members of this forum, hence pretty capable of knowing what you want to achieve and how to do it?

I'll tend towards a tone control as usual, possibly more versatile, but maybe your question was something of that would be most lossy and thus favourably placed after the second stage - so as to retain gain, if I read Blencowe right?

I don't even know what would be most suited as an alternative one knob tone stack. I've been rather disapointed with the Muff style one ... :?

Due to the wide range of control, this is my preferred option https://el34world.com/charts/Schematics ... hem_2_.pdf

Hi Chopsauce,

Thanks for the kind words. The question was more for fun and perspective. This is a parts-on-hand build and the voicing is similar to the Blonde Bassman Normal channel rather than a traditional Tweed Deluxe. I've added a couple of extra knobs in the input jack holes for some added functionality and as a way to be able to control the gain and bass. Regarding the Tone Control it will be of the 18W type. I was considering placing it after the (simple) Master volume, but think it will probably be best to place it after the input stage as a way to use the small insertion loss to trim a little gain, as well as adjust the high end. On an 18W amp, I set the Tone to about 2pm and forget it. Sounds great.

As for the Muff control, I've modeled it to emulate a Dumble 102 tone Skyliner stack with the TMB knobs at about 1pm, 12pm, and 11pm respectively. I have not built that yet though.

Hi Pete,

Yes, thanks, I'm planning to use the 18W Lite IIb version. Since my input stage is paralleled, I am using a 500k Volume pot there. Will likely use 500k for Tone as well. Thanks for your input.
