Would this work? Valvestate bridge rectifier?

Post by Alexo »

Hey everyone, just curious, it would be a little absurd to use 3 rectifier tubes in any amp, but for the sake of discussion, is there any reason this wouldn't work? I assume you would want indirectly heated cathode tubes like EZ81's or 6X4's...?

I've seen schematics that show half-tube-half-ss bridge rect's, where the 2 bottom tubes in this schematic are replaced with diodes, I assume in such a case you could calculate in about 50% of the normal voltage drop for a given tube?

Thanks!

Yes, that would work (indirectly heated cathodes, yes!!). You would have twice the valve voltage loss, as two are in series with the current flow at any one time, but still close to twice the output voltage as using the same PT center-tapped in a conventional hookup.
