6V6 plexi build, signal cutting out

Post by flintrock »

After many days and hours of trying to debug my 6V6 plexi build, I am at a loss. I used the schematic and layout from Mark Huss pages. I did add a rube rectifier in place of the ss rectifier. Using a 5y3 I get 385 volts dc. Plugging in I get a distorted choppy sound that doesn't sound good but I can hear the amp wanting to take off. I injected a signal at the PI and the power amp section is working and played cleanly. Not the case at V1 and V2 those sound choppy and bad. I rechecked all solder joints, reflowed a few and checked the schematic both directions. There are a few wires under the board I haven't resoldered cause I'll have to take the board out. I did add a spst switch to use the second half of V2 switchable. Maybe did that wrong. Here are some wacky voltages too and I'll get some pics up shortly.
V1:
1- 349
2 - 2
3 - 0
4 - 3
5 - 3
6 - 349
7 - 1
8 - 0
9 - 3

V2:
1 - 353
2 - 0
3 - 0
4 - 3
5 - 3
6 - 385
7 - 347
8 - 0
9 - 3

I was on the high scale so that would be why heater voltages look low. But definitely some high voltages going on here.

no voltage on the cathodes, high plate volate. no current flow through
the tube..? are the cathode resistors grounded? pictures?

Your voltages seem awful high on the preamp.

What is the voltage drop measurements across your preamp plate resistors? I would expect a significant voltage drop; 100-200volts. If there is no or little voltage drop, the tubes aren't conducting. Bad tube connections...? Bad cathode grounds...? Could an incorrectly grounded grid bias resistor prevent the tube from conducting? Maybe bad tubes, swap with know good tube. Get a good look at your tube socket connections and your grounds. Also, measure the cathode voltage using a lower setting on your meter. Remeasure your plate and cathode resistors, make sure they are their proper values.
Once again, make sure you're not missing a ground for your cathodes, it easy to forget when assembling a turret board amp.

It only drops about 30v across the plate resistor. Going to check out the sockets.[/img]

Input jack and fat switch.

where does the yellow wire on v1 terminal #3 go?
more pictures of the ground buss, one end to the other.
with the amp unplugged and off, if you use your ohm meter and measure from V1 terminal #3 to the chassis, what is your resistance? terminal #8 to chassis, what is the resistance?

I'm guessing that the PT centre tap is connected to the chassis rather than the ground bus, per the 'standard' 1987 layout.

I see the ground bus isn't soldered to the pots (no bad thing) and that you've used an isolated input jack - do you have any connection between the ground buss and the chassis?

If not, I think you need one.

The yellow wire on pin 3 goes to the .68 uf cap and 2.7k resistor.
Resistance on pin 3 to ground is 2.84k
Resistance on pin 8 to ground is .84k
Pots are soldered to the buss, and a ground wire attaches from it to a common chassis ground. Center tap is grounded to chassis.

Stupid question, are the heater elements glowing?

Sure are. I have heater voltage.
Sockets look fine and tubes are well tensioned and seated.
