Chokes - VAC rating vs VDC rating

Post by surfsup »

On some chokes I don't see any reference to a max VDC rating but there are listings for VDC on hammond. For example, for this series of EPCOS inductors:

There is a 250VAC rating but no DC rating. I'm curious if it could be used after the rectifier.

Probably because most power supplies have the choke early on in the string with a lot of ripple.

Just a guess.

The rating is due to the wire size and current handling.

BTW, that spec sheet is for double chokes.

Sorry, I was just copy pasting an example of a choke with no DC voltage rating and didn't notice.

Without knowing the wire dia, looking at current of 2A or higher capabibility with a breakdown voltage of 1400VAC how do we determine if it is safe at 500VDC rectified, for example?
