AC cord length?

Post by jaysg »

What do your customers like?

I'm replacing a 5' (computer) cord for a guy on an AA164 Bassman. I can't get in touch with him at the moment....I've got a 15' cord and I think that's on the long side. I was thinking 10' or 12'.

Are you talking about IEC cords? I like 6 to 8 feet, myself.

But here's a tip: look for IEC cords at your local thrift shop. Mine has boxes of them for $0.25 each. Make you feel like Santa Claus when you go around handing them out like candy.

Around 8 feet is what I try to put on the Fenders.

I have 6' and 9'6". The longer one is a better bet for gigs. 6' is fine at home.

Depends how much chord you can cram in the back. For my gigging amps, I prefer the mains chord to be as long as possible/practicable

In the pictures that were recently posted of Dumble SSS #4, it looked like Dumble used a full length, orange extension cord as the mains cord. I don't think length matters from a sound perspective as long as the cord is of sufficient gauge. It is just a matter of convenience based on intended use.

Depends how many cabs you stuff under them

Seriously, 8 or 9 feet seems to work well in most cases without being too long and troublesome at transport time....

I've got a 25' 'blue' outdoor extension cord i cut the end off of and put a nice Schurter IEC plug on. Never know when i'll need the extra length.

I mentioned it's a Bassman, so 6' barely fits inside the head as is. Anything longer will have to stay outside.

Great tip. I have a box at work with about 100 or more over the years. I am using those until they run out!

I use the 12' 16 Gauge suicide cords from CE Distribution (or AES)

I find that I can still jam them into the strain relief made for 18 Gauge wire and that they can coil nicely inside of a small fender cabinet.

I have used IEC type in the past but they are not good for coiling - they are too kinked up and ugly.

No matter how long the cord is, it will always be 6 inches too short--Murphy's law.
