Naked Amp

Post by Decko »

Hi All,

Here is my newest project.

Naked Amp.

It is a breadboard to help me design layouts before committing.

The frame is aluminum.
I broke the anodization to allow for continuity throughout the frame.
I made rigth angle brackets for pots, switches and power plugs so that I could move it anywhere around the frame.
The sockets are 8 pin and 9 pin din rail mountable.
I modified an 8 pin socket to accept a 9 pin PCB socket then soldered to the terminal strips.
The t-slot allows me to connect parts easily including the power supplies under the frame.
I added handles for transport.

I am thinking either a Dumble type build or a high gain build.

We'll see!

Cheers
Danny

Hey, thanks for the kind words!

80/20, Bosch or Item are all good extruded aluminum pieces to work with.
I used Item on this build.

I like the modularity.

I thought that having an open frame would make navigating the circuit easier.

Fantastic breadboard idea. I've got so many of those little plastic screw terminal things laying around it isn't funny. I might fab up something similarly dangerous with wood, my bass player has a nice wood shop but not much metalworking stuff. I'm getting tired of drawing layouts by hand, plus this would help with prebending wires before srarting an actual build.

That is really very elegant and a real inspiration.
Very neat is how you have dealt with the transformers.
Love all the 3D thinking on this.

Nice!

Now you won't have to commit to a chassis until you know you like the amp!

Cool! Now all you need is a Gittler guitar to play through it!

Dood, is that a bare-bones kit?

:p

You just gave me an idea I won't share because it's too cool, but I'll never do becauae I am a slacker.. but it's a very cool idea. Ok, screw it... I want to make an amp in a human skeleton. I already have the person picked out! Chuck Norris! How cool is that?

The Gittler always reminds me of another guitar from slightly before it's (mostly unknown except for the Police video) time. Does anyone remember the Sardonyx? Ehhh.. terrible piece of hooie, anyhow.

Hi Cliff,

Using wood provides structural rigidity but obviously it will not be a good conductor.

If you know the exact dimension that you want, I could ask the supplier who kitted this project to kit the same thing for you complete with mounting hardware and bracketry for the pots, switches, etc. just let me know how many. Kitting means he would cut all pieces to length, machine all the connecting points. You would have to put it together. Like an erector set! All you need is a set of Allen wrenches. The t-nuts lock into place when you tighten them down. Easy. You can also buy dinrail for your sockets. You would have to supply all your own terminal strips... Not a big deal since your local electronics store has these as well as mouser. The only issue I found was 9 pin dinrail mountable blocks. No one makes these. So I took a standard 8 pin which cost around $3.00 and machined out the base to accept a 9 pin pcb socket. Then fit it in the base, soldered the leads to the terminal strips and I was able to make a 9 pin dinrails mountable unit.

Using this a wire board was also a big consideration for the overall design of this breadboard. I can easy move my fat hands in and out of the frame. Lead length is always important in amps.

That said I have plans to use this platform to combine chassis and head cabinet into one body. Traditionally we are putting chassis into head cabinets. Here you simply use the structural framing to contain the guts then you skin it with wood or plastic or any thing you want. Access to the inside would be a snap. Unbolt four screws and there you go!

That said, let me know and I will contact the supplier.

Regards,
Danny

Anything is possible! I wanted to stuff an amp into I miniature version of a Porsche carrera.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your kind words...
I looked at your work! Impressive!

I can see applying your creations to amp chassis. Especially the forming clear glass or plastic into the frame structures.

Danny
