what to use in place of a 2K audio pot?
i'm replacing the pots in an old Fender amp, the old pot is a 15A 2K pot - but i was wondering how i might go about replacing it with something else if i can't find 2K pots available anywhere. could i possibly compensate for the difference in resistance by adding a resistor to the circuit between the pot terminals and the trace on the PC?
i know they're out there, but i really want to avoid having to order from a special dealer for 1 pot and have to pay the extra shipping when i feel like i could compensate for it in another way.
is it possible to use a 1K instead? or is that too much of a difference?

Have any 5k pots? What is the control function? If it's what I think, better off paying shipping.

2k linear Alpha pots are available at Mouser.

In the mid pot position in that amp you could use 1K, 2K even 5K, linear or audio and not notice a huge difference in any case. But 1K or 5K snap-in pots aren't going to be any easier to find.
It actually looks like Music Parts Guru has all your pot values and the 9-pin jacks, too. Not terribly expensive either.

I you have a 5k pot, just put a 4k7 resistor across the 1 and 3 lugs. It will change the taper (how much depends on the existing taper) but it gets you in the ball park when it is wide open. sh

Luthierwnc, that would be a 3k3 across the element of a 5k to make a 2k, and the taper will not be changed ;^)Luthierwnc wrote:I you have a 5k pot, just put a 4k7 resistor across the 1 and 3 lugs. I knew someone would come along who could count!

Hello Man in the mid pot position in that amp you could use 1K or 2K Linear pot. I don't have idea to use the 5k pot.

I actually checked out Music Parts Guru and ya they do have all the pot values in snap-in pots that i would need, but they're like $9 a piece.Firestorm wrote:It actually looks like Music Parts Guru has all your pot values and the 9-pin jacks, too. Not terribly expensive either.
I bought this amp for $100 - I don't think i'm gonna spend $100 to fix this amp up.
I think i'm gonna go with some generic mini (16mm) pots (non-snapin) and just jumper the terminals to the PCB and also jumper the trace points on the PCB where the mount brackets from the snap-in pots would sit.
In theory it seems like it'd work just fine. It might be a lot of tedious tinkering, but i don't mind. I'm in it to save some money and i enjoy tinkering with my toys.
I just needed to know what values i could use in place of ones that were hard to find.
Thanks Everybody!

$4, but who's counting... Hey, if you can make higher-quality pots fit, go for it. You need to get the right style shafts so the knobs fit.joel_ostrom wrote:I actually checked out Music Parts Guru and ya they do have all the pot values in snap-in pots that i would need, but they're like $9 a piece.

It's also possible to disassemble pots and bend the wiper 1mm so it contacts fresh track; almost like new.
