Using the tools: autoranging multitesters are finicky

Post by Reeltarded »

I have noticed some of my resistors, oddly just old stuff, measures in fractions of a meg (decimalized M ohm), where the newer resistors of the same values generally just right to the k ohm scale.

It's annoying, and not much more. Just wanted to see if anyone had an idea of why these parts are seen differently to the machine.

I usually hit the leads of old resistors with a little steel wool before measuring them and installing them. It takes off the surface layer of oxidation which can affect the reading.

Most of these are tested as I pull them out of old amps, I hadn't considered cleaning them making a difference, generally fresh flowed solder there.

Both a Sperry and an RS pos do it. Just wondering if they know something I don't. :)

Clips or just probe ends? If find clips are essential to a stable readout.
