Broke amp day!

Post by Reeltarded »

Friend bought a Marshall 2205 half stack. Channel switcher with reverb. Remember those?

This is kinda freaking me out. I have lights and voltages everywhere (as expected too!) but not a tic nor a hiss when it's on, and out of standby.

Fuses aren't popping. Hmm.. any clues? I am lost about now. I checked out all the switching jacks, swapped tubes in every position tapped around inside with it idling.. I find nothing.

This is the Marshall my mother dreamed of when I was a kid. :)

I haven't disassembled anything to test, but all the things that can be tested in situ have been, and I did continuity checks all around.. I think I know someone who is borrowing an amp for a saturday gig this week.

PCB sucks to work on! Can I get an amen? Amen! Roger that.

Do you get a loud clunk when you probe the phase inverter plates
? If not, I'm willing to put a sixpack on the output transformer. Jelle

It's the OT, or a bad solder joint at the OT or input.

Was hoping you wouldn't say that and betting you would. Time to strip another basketcase! Yeehaaa.

Those amps are the ONLY amps I have ever had to replace OT's on

It's neat for one reason: it has a simple version of anything you'd ever want, loop, direct, ect.. I am going to copy this direct setup to one of my tinker heads. Finally something I can do with parts I have laying around.. except a hole punch.

I used one of these in the HUGE 80S to drive my clean rig. I miss the 80s! Terrible songs, great players.

Doesn't that model have an effects loop? If so you might try plugging into the effects return or using another guitar cable to jump the loop... sometimes those jack get funky and need cleaning... Try that before buying an OT...

I checked all the switching jacks. It's the OT, but that is a problem with these I have heard.
