Tone King Mid-bite?

Post by Gaz »

I played a Tone King Metropolitan and was very impressed, especially by the simple yet effective overdrive tone control section. Anyone have a clue how the "Mid-bite" works?

The dual power adjustments for each channel worked scary well too. Hmmmmm?

The dual power control is very simple to implement. KOC has been selling power scaling kits for years that do this.

They - Tone King - suggest a revolutionary power control method, my guess would be that it is nothing more than a current controlled cathode bias. The power mosfet is clearly visible on the outside of the chassis in the pics and we all know cathode bias is the easiest to fool with as bias tracking is not an issue as it would be in fixed bias amps. Nothing new here...

As far as the mid-bite, I have not played one or seen the insides....

I'd not seen the photo with the big mosfet. I guess I've never seen an amp with separate controls for each channel. I guess it's just a relay switching between both pots in tandem with the channel switching ??

I wanna say that the mid bite is like the "Texas Tea" control, but with a hardwired tonestack with Tweed values. Not sure how the regular tone control is set up - I didn't check to see if it still worked with the gain all the way up.

Yes, that would be my guess too.

Nice amps for sure. I sat down with one once to quickly try it out. It ended up taking a while.

Here's a link for the pic, although it seems impossible to tell what's going on because of the PCB. Controls from left to right: volume, tone, mid-bite.
