Help me wade through power supply options - Edcor?
I've been collecting parts for a 5E3 build, and I realized I have almost enough parts to build *two* 5E3 amps! I really just need a second power transformer and that's about it...
I'm thinking about trying out Edcor since they get favorable reviews here, and I have an uncut/undrilled aluminum chassis as my base...so any transformers would "fit"...but I've overwhelmed with what is correct for a 5E3 power transformer.
Every power transformer I look up the specs for, that is called "5E3 tweed deluxe", seems to have different specs. So what would be good or correct specs? Can someone point me to a correct model on Edcors page, please?
My first 5E3 I have a Weber PT and Triode OT, but I've heard grumbles about both online...so I'm not sure I have the best options there.
For the second 5E3, I figured I'd go Edcor PT and OT, and maybe build it so it could take 6L6 tubes while I'm at it.
Suggestions?

Triode would be Magnetic Components out of Chicago and they get pretty good ratings.
I have a set in my 100w ODS and no complaints.

You will probably do just fine with a 325-0-325 @ 70mA for a 5E3. I don't think you need to be picky about it either -- a few volts this way or that won't be noticed. 100mA is plenty and 120mA is way more than that circuit needs. For the filament supply you need 5V@2A and 6.3V@2A and that allows something for the pilot light on the 6.3V winding.
Magnetic Components has one for a reasonable price. Musical Power Supplies has one for even less, I think.

Re: Help me wade through power supply options - Edcor?
You need a PT that will give you 365 Vp on your RCA 6V6GT/G power tubes. That will give you 5E3 hog heaven! 375 Vp is OK too I find with GT/G spec tubes. These are from the '40s and are US military spec grade from WWII. Your Grandad's tax dollars at work!
Don't settle for 6V6GT, the old GT/G designation means -GT tubular glass but with the earlier -G coke bottle spec.
This sounds dumb but believe me it is not. Just check out the difference in NOS prices between any GT/G spec, Ken-Rad, Tung-Sol and RCA and the GT only spec. There IS a reason for that.
Mo' bass, slightly rolled off top, sounds VERY FINE in a 5E3!
OTOH, the '50s RCA GTs work fine in a brown 6G3 Fender Deluxe, higher gain preamp, 220K/3K3 vs 100K/1k5, and fixed bias. Ask me how I know this. The surprises are part of the fun!

Now see, I'm even more confused. I just need someone to point out an Edcor that would work for me. Please!

http://www.edcorusa.com/category/37-xpw ... oltage=327
XPWR047-120
330-0-330 @ 120mA
6.3V @2.5A
5V@3A
$53.56
It seems you are set on going with an Edcor, but I am not understanding that.
For $39.95 you can get the PT325.2 here and it will do very nicely:
http://www.musicalpowersupplies.com/4.html
For $46.50 you can get model # 40-18016 from Magnetic Components:
http://store.triodestore.com/deretrvipo ... ipotr.html
Of course, please choose whatever floats your boat. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

Those Edcor trannies are so well made and sound very good and I agree they look damn good.

I've got an 8k 25 watt 4-8-16 Edcor OT in my shopping cart, plus the PT listed above. Thanks guys!

Re: Help me wade through power supply options - Edcor?
I like Edcor a lot for PTs. I've only tried one of the their OTs, a HiFI OT, and it was not the sound I was looking for. Not that it was bad, just not what I was after. Maybe I should have tried their non-HiFi GXPP line of OTs. If you are looking for a "5E3 sound" I recommend Mojotone 5e3 OT which I've used and like. Or try the Edcor GXPP line or Magnetic components, but I haven't tried.
On your original post you mentioned you are also looking to maybe build it for 6L6. If you are, then your PT requirements will be a lot different. 120mA for a pair of 6l6 is not something I would use. Also, for a pair of 6L6, I don't think you should use a 5Y3 rectifier. I would use a GZ34 ( or go SS), but then that means you will have less of a voltage drop, so a 330-0-330 PT with GZ34 will give you a higher B+, fine for a 6l6 but not so good for the a 6V6. You'll also probably have to up the voltage rating of your electrolytics.
I think this one will be good to handle 6v6/6l6 PT requirements...

It does not have a CT for the 6.3 heater though and I wish it was 250mA instead of 200mA, but I think it should be fine. I've seen 200mA spec'd for some Fenders driving a pair of 6l6.
Your OT requirements will also change if you decide to also run 6l6.

Hrm. I have a CXPP OT in my shopping cart...the GXPP only go up to 15 watts.

If you are only looking to build it for 6V6, then I would think 15 Watts for a pair of 6V6 should be fine.

I suspected as much. It's as good of a reason as any to buy the Edcor. Enjoy.Lonely Raven wrote:Seriously...because it's pretty!Phil_S wrote: It seems you are set on going with an Edcor, but I am not understanding that.![]()

Sorry to disappoint .... You'll notice nowhere did I say, find me the cheapest, ugliest 5E3 PT available.Phil_S wrote:I suspected as much. It's as good of a reason as any to buy the Edcor.
