Sozo vs Sozo?
I realized that sozo has a higher end mustard too, this one about twice the cost. Apparently they only sell them di9rect, not thru retailers. Has anyone tried these and are they truly different/better than the ones all the online stores sell for a bit over $2?

Re: Sozo vs Sozo?
to me the standard sozo sounds pretty much identical to the Mallory 150 just a tad sweeter.
But the Premium Sozo is fantastic sounding, really sweet.
I love them both and they are by far the best sounding caps I've tried in any circuit.. but they're just totally not a viable option here in the UK.
I tend to use LCR and ERO caps unless i'm building something special.

Re: Sozo vs Sozo?
Not to me ! I just replaced my mallories with the standard sozos and it made a beautiful difference. But you're the second one to say the premium sozos sound a lot better than the standard ones which bums me out a bit since i just got them and now i wish i'd gotten the premiums. Anyone have opinions as to where the big difference in tone is made so i can consider just buying a few of the premiums to replace the standards in just the most crucial spots?

I will be getting more in shortly too.
You can also get them from Tube Town in Germany, more expensive delivery but if you getting other items then you may as well shop about too.
I havent used the vintage ones yet, but will get some to try soon

I've used them both. The standard ones are good. The premium ones are great.

Re: Sozo vs Sozo?
Maybe I'm weird but I don't like my caps to add a lot of coloring to my amps. I prefer to do my tone shaping with intentional, controllable methods as opposed to mojo methods like cap swapping. With that said, different cap types are constructed differently and have different parasitics that I'm sure play a part in the sound, but I've never seen anybody quantify this is a meaningful way. Well, I take that back as I recall somebody showing an impedance vs. frequency plot for many popular cap types and they were all well under 1% of each other.
The caps I use are what high-performance circuits of the heyday used, polystyrene and paper-in-oil caps (sorry if I sound like a broken record
). No coloring that I can hear which allows me to tweak other system aspects for various tonal responses. The highs are known by some to be brittle but I prefer the term "accurate"
.

I don't care for caps that add "coloring" to the sound either. That's why I like the Sozo's--they seem to let all the nuances and clarity pass through (once they are broken in).
But, to each their own. Some like Orange drops--I detest them with a passion.

Re: Sozo vs Sozo?
I'm with Jana on this. Who's to say that sozos color the sound? How do you know they simply don't INHIBIT the sound that would be otherwise there if the caps being used weren't somehow limiting the amp by not passing details that should have been there. Sozos were built to mimic caps that were made back in a day when companies made products without agendas like they do today. (profit before all else)
To my ear sozos don't color it at all. They just bring out what i already heard but to a greater degree which is something i tried to do with tweaking. But that only took me so far no matter how many things i tried. So they allowed that extra bit which i believe the mallories stifled. Same tone, just more of it.

Re: Sozo vs Sozo?
There are quite a few cap types generically called "orange drops": polyester, polypropylene, metallized film, film and foil, fat, flat, copper leads, etc., etc. Any particular ones that draw your ire? Or is it the color ...Jana wrote:Some like Orange drops--I detest them with a passion.
Re: Sozo vs Sozo?
It's the color. They make the tone all "orangy" sounding.
Re: Sozo vs Sozo?
I know I am digging whats going on with my 5E3 I built with the Blue moulded Sozo premiums. In all fairness though, I never heard the amp with anything else. I know the premium Sozos are hand made. They are kinda pricey. I don't believe they are available in every value either.

Re: Sozo vs Sozo?
It was a serious question (well, except for the last bit). Is it the 715/716Ps you especially dislike, or is it the 225P and 6PS as well. I've yet to do anything serious with the Sozos (and NOW apparently I have to buy the premium ones, damn you) because I still have so many bins of different flavored orange ones.Jana wrote:It's the color. Sorry I wasn't pointing a finger at the Sozo's with my statement, I've never (knowingly) heard them, I was just saying that in general I don't like caps that color!

I'm guessing all of the above 225P, 418P, 715, 716 and 6PS
