Some Old PA heads
A friend gave me some old electronics, including this old PA head. I am thinking to eventually make a Princeton/AC15 type of circuit with 2x6V6. I am not real knowledgeable about electronics, and have even less experience with octal preamp tubes. Would I be wise to just figure on using 12A** type dual triodes rather than going octal.? Or is it pretty easy to get/work with 8 pin pre tubes.?
On a side note...the wire on the PT is obscuring it, but the PT has a tap for 117, 125 VAC. Thought it was strange for a device this old to be wired for 125, seems like 117 would have been the norm back then
Thank You

Re: Some Old PA heads
That is the coolest chassis I have ever seen.

Re: Some Old PA heads
I can't see doing what's needed to make the octal holes smaller to accept noval sockets. Too much work for too little reward.
I can't see all the tube designations. It looks like this amp ran 6V6G finals. For preamp tubes, 6SL7 is close to a 12AX7, though more like a 5751. The 6SN7 is a great match for a 12AU7; these are very nearly equivalent. There are other variants, like 6SC7, which is about the same as a 6SL7 with a common cathode.
You shouldn't have any problem at all using octal tubes and it will be so much easier to do that.
Looks like nice iron in this amp.

Now I know what those are for. Just noticed them the other day (briefly) as I was looking at other stuff on the Mojo site.
Thanks

That chassis is just Fabulous!
I've got a same type of project coming along when I got my combo finished first.
Gonna make it Dumble-like (only clean channel) amp.
Personally I just love the looks of those old PA amps.
Mine looks like this.

+1, please don't harm the front in any way. That red knob is terrific.Dingleberry wrote:That chassis is just Fabulous!
Check this out. Thing thing is just BEGGING to be made into a 5C8 Twin, it's practically there already. Wish I could find something like this for $10 at a yard sale.

I was aware of those. In this particular case, I don't approve...not that it's my place to approve or disapprove, but you can't stop me from having an opinion!M Fowler wrote:http://www.mojotone.com/amp-parts/Tube-Sockets
Re: Some Old PA heads
This chassis should have octal preamp tubes and old style bottle 6L6's
There is even enough sockets for a tremolo circuit too!
That would be a sweet amp.

See what I mean - it's Begging! Hell, all it might need is a day on a light bulb limiter to reform the caps and it might be a fine guitar amp without any modding. I miss the days when I was bringing old stinky things home I was picking up with the last $10 in my wallet.
Re: Some Old PA heads
Where should I look for guitar amp schematics with 8 Pin pre-amps.?
Magnatone perhaps.?
I have the chassis gutted with the exception of the trannies and the tube sockets. Who has schematics, with octals, for guitar amps.?
Thank You

http://www.hoffmanamps.com/ -> Schematics -> Fender -> B/C/D erahired hand wrote:Who has schematics, with octals, for guitar amps.?
Also 50s Gibson, Supros, etc. The Fenders are a good known quantity, hard to go wrong.

Here are some Fender types.

I did no know that.Cliff Schecht wrote:Anything pre 5E3 is an octal based Deluxe and I friggin love em!
Thanks everybody, I am kind of excited about this. This will be the first amp I have built while I actually have a BASIC understanding of electronics/tubes. I have built a few Ceriatone kits, and that was great experience, but I did not know much when I built those. It was more of a "paint by numbers" process. At least now I kind of know what I am doing.
I am still struggling through Merlin's first book. I guess I just need to read it, glean/absorb what I can, and read it again a few times. It is very well written, but probably (definitely) a bit over my head in parts. I have only been at this a few years, and have taken a few electronic/electricity classes at my local college. I was taught to look at schematics using electron flow. A lot of Merlin's book was written with an eye on conventional flow of electrons, and it definitely throws me a little sometimes. Some of you guys that have been at this for a while probably have no problem switching gears between "Electron" and "Conventional" flow. When you are just starting (like me) you tend to think there is only one "right" way to look at things I guess.
Thanks Again for the schematics. I will look at several....
BTW
I guess I should check out old Ampeg's also.
