Clever but Stupid (CBS)

Look at this photo of a Peavey Delta Blues 1x15 50w. The jumper wires that traverse the two circuit boards serve as the structural hinge!

Any other examples of clever but stupid engineer tricks?

Yeah, same as the classic 30 which failed me 3 times at gigs due to those solid core jumpers fracturing. Stupid alright !

Actually, what i did eventually was to parallel every single one of those jumpers with stranded wire ! I had 3 classic 30's over the years and like i said had the issue 3 times, once in one of them twice in another and one never had that issue. Probably because i didn't use it as much. At least 2 of them did gigs with me for a good decade while i used a stereo setup with the C30 as effects return. Once tho i was using it as the main amp when it went down and had no spare. Luckily my effects included some amp models i was able to finish the gig with thru the PA...horrid !

But anyways, i paralleled the jumpers and never had that issue again. The problem is the vibration the amp receives not only when playing it but worse, when transporting it to a gig eventually causes the jumpers to take turns fracturing.I would advise anyone gigging with the classic series to either do what i did or set the amp on a cusion of some sort when transporting it to and from gigs.

I can't really call them clever but the B52's are sort of a marvel of modern budget-based engineering. Everything is rated to be the bare minimum acceptable, the parts they use are complete crap and yet a lot of these things are still working. They sound like hell and all eventually break but that's no biggie, you just throw out the amp and buy another.

I'm actually hoping that amps like this completely lose their value so that I can buy them at pennies on the dollar, strip them out and build something cool inside there. One thing nobody would complain about, lotsa room in those big cheap steel chassis..

I think what Peavey is doing is valid IF the screws I see on the bottom board prevent it from flexing with no jumpers installed. Not that I would ever produce a product this way, shock would easily break a trace if the securing screws were ever so loose. Definitely risky business for a production amp..
