Anyone making their own guitar cables??
I was just getting ready to order some George L. plugs and cable to make a couple of cords and started wondering... what's a good source of coax is available what kind of plugs are you using..... it's got to be cheaper... I have 4 amps I built and put some work into and I am still using a couple of 10 ft. cords I paid 9 bucks apiece for....Thanks

IMHO instrument cables - "this is not nice but i've been burned by bad cables."
I stand by the Switchcraft connectors
Quad star cable instrument cable, Canari, beldon, mogami.
Everything else is ... not good enough... at least for me, why compromise your tone before you even get to the amp?
George L's are great for pedal boards, I don't really care for the instrument cables.
Monster cables are a marketing hype JOKE!
proco hosa, fender, whirlwind, joe-smoe, bargin bin... Disposable CRAP!
When you build your own cables as long as you take the time to make sure you have a solid "LOW IMPEDANCE" contact you should ahve years of trouble free operation.
Not trying to start a fight! dollar for dollar the professional parts cost less then the hype'd up consumer stuff. keep in mind any cable you can buy at a big box store is not a professional instrument cable.
We had a thread for this in the past.

Well that's kind of my feeling.... almost $100 for two 12 ft. cables.. I thought there must be a cheaper source to buy high grade cable and fittings?

Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
I know some guys that have bought Lava cable direct. They just contacted the owner through the web site and bought direct. They have nothing but good things to say about him or his product.
I am going to build some soldered instrument and pedal board cables out of the Lava cable. I guess the solderless system that Lava uses is pretty good, but I don't know why you would want to go solderless if you know how to solder

Don't cheep out on guitar cords. Like selloutrr said, get switchcraft, neutrik beldon, mogami etc. If you're going to cheep out, just go to guitarfetish.com and buy cheepy cables, making cheep one's doesn't even pay off.
I use the guitarfetish cables for open mike night and rehersal. Otherwise I buy quality stuff.

Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
The G&H 90 degrees are better than the 226 stock. Canare vs. Mogami is braid vs. wrap. Interesting arguments both ways, with Mogami winning for fixed instalations and Canare for live work.

My Switchcraft/Canare cables are still going strong after over 5 years of constant abuse. I swear by them over any other cable others try to offer me. The Canare cable is where it's at, it's four conductor silver-stranded Teflon wire with a braided shield. Great stuff and ridiculously durable.

Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
+1 on what Cliff says. For the cable, you should have something with at least 90% shield. Funny thing, though, even with good stuff you can run into weirdness. I've got one that's made with Canare wire and either Switchcraft or Neutrik plugs that plays like a radio in my 'wreck like amp. The cheap cable works fine. Generally speaking, the cheap cable probably has more capacitance to it, which is oft considered an undesirable feature.

On the 4 conductor cable do you just combine the 4 wires into one lead and solder to one point?Cliff Schecht wrote:My Switchcraft/Canare cables are still going strong after over 5 years of constant abuse. I like Bill Lawrence cables. Many don't like skinny cables, but I like 'em. Made in the good 'ol US of A. George L's made in???

I'll never buy another store bought cable. I make mine with Neutrik silent angled ends on the guitar side and regular nuetrik toward the amp. For cable I use Mogami 2524. Dead silent when changing guitars, never had one fail. If I'm not mistaken Glen and JB both use this same cable.

Yes All four wires are soldered to the tip (positive) the shield goes to ground. Another added feature of the Quad star if one of the four break you still have a working cable.
Phil - If you are experiencing RF in your cable. Meter the cable, continuty and ohms. Shield to shield, shield to tip, and make sure to wiggle it and weed out the possiblilty of an intermittant contact or crimp in the cable. as well as a solid ground it should meter 0.00 or 0.01ohms on the ground and less then 0.03 on the tip to tip, probably closer to 0.01. It's possible for the cable to have a lifted ground and still work causing it to pickup RF.
