5E3x2 Head chassis source besides Weber?

Post by sbolt »

I like Weber's offerings for sure, however the head chassis is the same as the combo chassis in his kits, causing the tubes to be horzontal.

I want to build a 5E3x2 head with the controls at the bottom in front and the tubes standing up (Marshall style) rather than horizontal.

Does anyone out there make a chassis like this? I was thinking of using a head chassis for the Tweed Twin at Ceriatone (if that would work), but if someone in the USA makes one, that would be good as well.

thanks in advance

For what your looking to do I just order a blank chassis from Ken Watts at www.turretboards.com or www.rjguitars.net and drill or punch my own.

Yeah I saw the Ceriatone, but I need room for 4 6V6's.

I probably just get a raw chassis and drill it myself.

Will a large step-bit work for the tube socket holes?

If you are intending to use a step bit, confirm the size required for your sockets. Most octal sockets are 1 1/8", but I have some that are 1 1/4". I have a habit of recycling used stuff. It may be that what you buy today as new is standardized on 1 1 /8". Anyway, you get the point, you can't drill a 1 1/4" hole with a 1 1/8" bit! And if you think you can file it out, forget that, as 1/8" is actually quite a lot of metal and your hole won't be round.

Step bits are relatively expensive retail. I buy mine on eBay. I stick to name brands. I've got 4 Irwin bits I got for very reasonable prices (including s/h), maybe 50% of typical retail. I don't bid on cheap Pacific rim knock offs. Used properly they last for a good while. I've got one that I abused and it now has a dull ring on a size that I often need, so be careful.
