Re: Australian Amps
For some reason the Goldentone amps have piqued my interest. It may be because I have a few 6DQ6B tubes lying around and they were used in some models. Top cap construction and said to be powerful, strong bottom end, clean and loud tubes
May start fooling around with some schematics

Here is one

.........Now where did I put it?
Re: Australian Amps
Aussie artist Mia Dyson has a few Goldentone amps. I was lucky enough
to catch one of her gigs a couple of years ago. I believe she was using a
Goldentone Revebmaster 212 that night and the tones were amazing.
She played a lot of songs from her "Parking Lots" album and the live
sound was close to the recordings. Take a listen to her cd if you want to
get an idea of what these amps sound like.
Eminar is another Aussie amp brand that was mentioned in the Premier Guitar article. I picked up a 100 Watt model and it was insanely loud and
clean. I dropped a Marshall 2203 preamp in front of the O/P section
and it turned out to be a great amp. My brother says it's one of the best
rock amps he's ever played and has threatened to kill me, if I ever sell
it! It's great to see the Aussie amps get a mention on this forum.
Try the 6DQ6B's. I think they're a good valve and I don't think you'll
be disappointed.
Cheers,
Paddy

Re: Australian Amps
I had a great time going through the various Australian amps and schematics provided on some.
It's great to see all the not well known amps get some screen time for a change.

Re: Australian Amps
The 6CM5/EL36 is similar. Low Vp, high Ip.
Apparently Mullard made an EL36 WITHOUT the plate cap, which is interesting, but I 've not been able to find a datasheet on that one.

el36 and 6dq6ers
I have been repairing and restoring Australian amps for 2 years now and love to come across those el36 and 6dq6 sweep tubes in an amp, my favorite ebay finds are the awa stc and phillips pa amps... I pull out the tone and volume controls as they really don't suit a guitar and either place in a fender bassman 4 or a selmer treble&bass, preamp section (volume and treble and bass controls) ,you end up with a fantastic sounding blues amp with plenty of bottom end.
The 6dq6s arent to easy to find but the el36s are cheap and easy to find. I have used them in pushpull pairs as well as push pull arrangements using 6l6 suited output transformers that sound great. I have noticed if I use a purpose built el34 output transformer there's a lot more output tube saturation ie creamy distortion. I have to say if your looking to build a purpose built Telecaster amp think about using these tubes.

Aussoe! Aussie! Aussie!
Nice stuff!
Nice stuff!
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.
Re: Australian Amps
Great stuff alright.
I used to be able to pickup old audio amps all the time like this Zenith chassis, all of them must have been sent to the dump 20 years ago.

Re: Australian Amps
I recently used one of the AWA PA amps for Gingertube's Junkbox Express circuit.
It had already been messed with and came out well, nice iron and looks nearly as ugly as me.
I imagine it was used to play music to sheep shearers or for factory announcements or something back in the fifties throughh KT66 tubes.
You don't see these beasts around these parts very often.
I like how they printed the schematic on the cabinet!

Re: Australian Amps
Electronics Australia published a 40W (Playmaster 116) and 60W (Playmaster 117) using 6DQ6A which are on Roly 's website here:

Actually you should use only 6DQ6B for teh 60W version.
These were very similar to the Goldentones of that era.
I have 3 more of those Philips/AWV PA Amps sitting on my shelf waiting for me to get around to them, 2 with a pair of 6CM5s and one which runs three pairs in parallel push pull for 100 to 120 Watts, that one is to be rebuilt as a bass amp. The one I have already rebuilt to the "Junkbox Trainwreck" runs a pair of 6CA7 (EL34) with cathode bias (B+ = 380V) for 32 Watts out.
Over the years I have worked quite a few of the Amps listed on that site and a few of teh schematics are actually my circuit traces which I sent to Roly.
Of ALL of the Aussie Amps I have worked on I loved this little thing the best, A Maton AM3
Cheers,
Ian

Interesting screen supply derived from secondary CT. Never seen this before.gingertube wrote:Electronics Australia published a 40W (Playmaster 116) and 60W (Playmaster 117) using 6DQ6A which are on Roly 's website here:
