Happy Saturday! Garage sale find Scott 800B

Post by xtian »

My neighbors are having a block-wide garage sale. I went out this morning hoping to find some old tube amp. You know, just hoping.

Hey! Scott amp / receiver set. TWENTY-SIX tubes! One for each letter of the alphabet!

Aside from the tubes, transformers and molded caps, anyone see stuff I should save?

I'm a bit of the pack rat type. I'd probably look to save anything I might be able to use. That includes sockets, wire, those brown power resistors, mounts for can caps, all screws and related hardware, knobs, and yes, many of those carbon comp resistors -- especially the ones with long leads -- worth 50 cents each if you want to buy them somewhere. You might even find usable pots and switches.

Real nice find and the price was right. Lucky you!

Have fun harvesting parts.

Pull the tubes for your guitar amps, replace 'em with new production tubes, get it working, and you'll have a cool radio for your workbench!

It's a Scott 800, one of the greatest post-WWII receivers and a real collector's piece. I would restore it or resell it to a collector.

I recant what I said. I didn't know what it was that you got. This is a must restore project. Look:

If you don't want to do the work, someone else will pay good money to get that radio from you. Leave the tubes in it unless they are clearly being cherry picked for guitar.

Wow. Thanks for the ID! Sounds like you think it's more valuable intact than as parts.

I hear you, Phil! I've been looking at the links. Man, that thing was purty when in good shape! Mine looks like Cinderella AFTER midnight.

Guess I'll put it on eBay as is.

I've got to get around to getting my grandfather's Scott amp and receiver fixed up and running. Well built, big transformers, and glorious mono. (Is anyone repressing vinyl in mono?)
