10% carbon comp vs new "premium" carbon comp......

Post by chopstuck »

Anyone notice a real difference. Is there a difference ?

among those who hear the carbon comp mojo ....

Justradios.com has both and have been very good to me.

I have used both from Just Radios and cant tell them apart. My tests weren't super critical though.

The 10% ones look more old school, if that matters to you! :)

Remember that the 1/2 watt carbon comp resistors are usually only good up to 350v.

That site does have the second CC resistors that are good up to 400v.

I know in most locations a 1/2 watt resistor is OK but I generally use 1 watt resistors, thicker leads and larger size I like.

I've been wanting to experiment with some CC or CF resistors for my PI plates to see if there really is any "M0j0". :D

Too bad that site doesn't carry any 1 watt CC or CF.
They do have the flame proof CF resistors but I'm not sure if that has any benefits of a carbon comp resistor.

So what is the carbon content of an old fashioned ohmite resistor ?
What is good enough ? Is this all smoke and ozone ?

I like Dale RN65's. No pops, hiss, or smoke--but hey--I manage to get that in other ways!

According to this article by R.G. Keen :

http://geofex.com/Article_Folders/carbo ... oncomp.htm

the mojo from CCs comes from the fact that they have a relatively high voltage coefficient of resistance, and this can basically only be exploited by using them as plate resistors. I think that modern CCs probably have a lower lower VCOR than vintage ones, but I don't know for sure.

I do know that I just looked at Angela.com's NOS inventory and they don't have 100Ks any more, but it looks like there are a few Ebay sellers selling small lots of NOS Allen Bradley's.

If you have NFB connected, don't bother. It will correct any distortion possibly gained.
