Cab

Post by angelodp »

Here is the temp cab, actually turned out ok for a junked 50's hi-fi cabinet I found on the street. I cut it down and made the grill work and interior supports etc. Old Fender handle on it. Marco says its cool he likes it. Snarls pretty well, the amp.

BTW threw in an EL34 today and it was very very good. It was tighter and more defined than either the 6V6 or the 6L6.

Hey that looks pretty good!

I want to thank you for following through and tweaking on this amp to bring out the goods with the 6L6GC tube. We'll see what other flavors we get with the various octal output tubes.

If you get a chance to do a sound clip or video I would really like to hear how she sounds.

Thanks for the hard work and sharing the lessons with us, I enjoyed watching this come together.

NFB switch

Post by angelodp »

Just threw in a DPDT switch on the NFB line so I can have

5k - cleaner more headroom
None - Raunchy full on drive
10k - moderate feedback still with some grind

i think this may be the ticket for me..... at least until tomorrow.

Its a fun platform and learning a lot.

How can I join the fun? How does someone order an Eagle Supre? I couldn't find specifics on RJ's site.

Thanks!

Awesome, nice work Ange. Did you come to any conclusions on how The Raunch sounded with 1 to 2M of feedback resistance as compared to none at all?? Hahah, that switch could be called the ZZTopBoost.

switched

Post by angelodp »

The 1M/2M is about equal to the none. This switch allows for the drive to be normal as shown in the original schematic ( 10k ) or more Raunchy ( no loop ) or smoother ( 5k ). The Raunch position is a ZZ Top Boost. I suppose it could all be done with a pot that has an on/off switch on it.

Ah,,,seeing the pics I see there's no hole drilled for the tone stack switch, or the HV line switch...so looks like i gotta do a bit more drilling - rats put all the stuff away already.

Okay so here's the chassis. A, I think I am going to use the extra tube for a loop, hence the two extra phono jack holes in back. I put an extra switch in while I was drilling to try to set up a "FAT" switch.

Extra octal is for a tube recto because I'm stubborn and don't believe all the experienced builders here that they are worthless in a SE amp. Even though they've all built 1000s of amps, they are clueless and I will prove it!

Okay so joking aside, I am going to do the rectotube anyway. Someone mentioned switching btwn the two? Maybe the HI/LOW will do something here.

Nothing wrong with a tube rectifier in an SE amp! They are great for getting the desired voltage drop. I think some confuse this with sag and that's not the case. Second, you have reduced rectifier noise (although FREDs and UF series diodes are really quiet so maybe that's a moot point) and third, it's another glowing tube! Nostalgia is part of the tube amplifier experience. I have some killer NOS rectifier tubes I hoard and secretly covet when I think no one is looking.
