Colossal, those tones are pretty easy to achieve... 3 or 4 gain stages, excellent grounding and a lot of interstage attenuation. Mind the amount of bass freqs and roll off the highs either across the plate r's or a cap to ground along the way.

Try putting the MV before the tone stack, especially if you use Jose diode bounding it helps smooth out the clipping.

BTW, IIRC the plate load on the Chupacabra is higher than 330k!

Personally I think Splawn has some great tone going with his 4 gain stages architecture (and above hints).

Hi John,

I've been messing around with some high gain stuff for a while in lower wattage format but have a 100W build planned. You are definitely right about interstage and bass attenuation along the way. I use pretty small coupling cap values in the preamp and recover bass in the power amp with larger coupling caps and resonance. Tight and punchy with huge low end. I use 100-470pF caps on the anodes for a bit of high trimming. Interesting about the Chupacabra's first plate load being >330k! Mark Fowler just posted some nice gut shots but I can't quite make out the plate values. Yes, agreed that Splawns sound nice.

Strange that Ceriatone doesn't post the layout for that particular amp.

A friend of mine just dropped off a 100 watter that I had built about 5 years ago. It's a high/low gain Jose type with dual inputs, dual gain, bright switchws, bass boost, frequency...all the bells and whistles... It's done on a marshall platform and sounds like the vids and clips of the real ones.

I'll open it up and will take some detailed pics this weekend. Should be quick work with the eyes around here to get a proper schem put together. I'll help all that I'm able.

Maybe because the Chupa is only available as a ready built unit, not a kit?
As far as I can see, Ceriatone provides open-access downloads for its layouts on all its kits.

I wonder how many amp companies do provide layout downloads for their builds? Can't say I've seen any apart from Nik's.

http://taweber.powweb.com/store/kits.htm

Click on any amp and you'll see both schematic and layout offered.

Take a gander at Schematic Heaven. Most schematics posted there are directly from the manufacturer.

Also, when I get amps in for repairs that I am not familiar with, I contact the manufacturer directly for schematics and layouts. 9 times out of 10, I get both emailed to me within days.

Ceriatone and Weber post schematics and layouts because they are in the business of selling kits.

BTW- Nik's amp in question, El Chupacabra, translates to English as The Goat Sucker

FUCHSAUDIO wrote:Cameron Modded Marshall.... I had one in the shop to add an effect loop to. No way could it be done, so I snuck in a patch jack and sold customer an external loop to plug into it . I think he's not in any danger of being ripped off....unless you have a ton of time and patience to figure this stuff out. Yes, it was a decent sounding amp. No I didn't bother measuring anything. I got out as quickly as I could. I've heard and played Jackson and Jose modded stuff easily as good sounding, that wasn't buried in whatever that is inside this amp. The customer had no idea, would never send it back to Mark (never counted on it being returned if he did), so I did the FX loop jack addition for him. [/b]
OMG!!!

what in the universe happened to that amp. seriously looks like a gorilla tossed up in there. lol
If it ain't broke don't fix it, mod it :)

My friend has a goat sucker 50 and is going to let me borrow it to inspect. I really don't think there is anything new in there. I'll post after I'm done...

I see that Ceriatone has now come out with the Yeti 50w and 100w.

I wonder when the Splawn QR and Nitro are going to be next.

I'm working on getting parts for the KT120 pair of tubes I got and go with four gain stage such as the Laney TI-100 or Splawn Nitro. That should be fun. :)

Ceriatone noted: Stemming from the famous Jose mods done to British Plexi amps, this model also has more useful features added for more versatility.

Different to the Chupacabra, the Yeti is a less bright, and tighter sounding amp, while retaining the aggressiveness of the Chupacabra. It can also clean up to a vintage Plexi sounding amp much easier than its elder brother.
