Re: More capacitor
This is Allyn's website so what he says goes.. As far as getting the information out there, we have a few threads on these capacitors now so it's a well known issue. Probably best to just lock these threads and move forward.

Re: More capacitor
I saw that a problem was mentioned, an answer was given...that's all. Weber asked that anyone reading the explanation he gave post it everywhere so he can replace the caps is pretty much notification to the world.
I'm not backing Weber...by any stretch!...trust me!
But, with Webers history of threatening forums, it's better to throw it back at their own site!
Luckily I've got lots of lawyers!

Re: More capacitor
Amp builders should warn others when they come across parts like this.
As 67plexi stated, the sprague caps. I've been trying to warn people about those for a while.
Even though you warn people, some just think its a bad run or something. Which does happen i guess. I've seen some pretty messed up amps using those caps. Or amps that have the tone sucked out of them.
It really sucks too, to have a new build have problems, and find out its a faulty "New" part.
You can get bad in anything, and it happens, but when it happens over and over that becomes a problem.
Probably a bit different, bad parts over faked tampered with parts. For years tubes have been the same way, faked, sold for NOS etc. So i guess, buyer beware, watch what you buy, and pass on to others so they know.

Re: More capacitor
Well Amp Builders,
I found this on the Sprague Atoms,
All made in USA has a USA stamp on it
The code Number then the Letter
8147L
9121L
0436H All Made IN THE USA
Import Sprague Atom
The Code Number then the letter then a number
0546H552
0548H579
0350H596
I hope this helps.
Steve.

Re: More capacitor
I just got a few Xicons in the mail, and they look a bit sketchy--wires stuck through oversized holes, the bottom cap is kinda spongy plastic, etc.
I'd hate to destroy a good cap I just waited a week to get, but I might have to in order to satisfy my paranoia.

Re: More capacitor
That's what Xicon's look like. We use them at PAiA and I noticed the same thing. They actually are decent caps as long as you stay within the specified ratings!mumford wrote:I just got a few Xicons in the mail, and they look a bit sketchy--wires stuck through oversized holes, the bottom cap is kinda spongy plastic, etc.

Re: More capacitor
After reading this thread and others, and finding an axial "ELON" branded cap in my parts (I have no idea where it came from as I don't buy that "brand"), I had to cut it open.
And lo and behold, a little radial cap inside. It had ~2mm leads, and the long leads soldered onto those, with one folded over the can & the other straight to make an axial. It was unmarked, and I have no cap tester (will be getting one this week).
Seeing those stubby leads with longer leads soldered on "leads" me to believe that some (most?) of these bogus caps are being recycled from discarded electronics and made into fake caps.
This is what we get for companies outsourcing to 3rd-world hell-holes: a race to the bottom, and getting ripped off to boot. The Wal-Mart-ification of this country sickens me, and this is *exactly* what it leads to: cheap goods in every sense of the word. So people get either ripped off, poisoned, or injured all for the sake of saving a buck.
Anyways, enough of that rant. I did cut the inner cap open waiting to find another one inside, but just the smelly innards were present... who knows what that cap was though.... it (the inner one) was unlabeled...

The "Walmart-ization of America". As the old song goes, "Don't start me to talkin!'
Anyone read "The Rise and Fall of The Roman Empire " lately?

Wonder if the Rubycon is a fake too.

Re: More capacitor
Sheesh!
That's a big difference in capacitance!
Three times smaller.
I don't see a voltage rating on the large can.

A barely visible 50WV?
Re: More capacitor
Good lord what will they think of next.
This is a real Rubycon, The fake Rubycon’s I had were gray and black axial .
It’s like Miles Davis said makes me sick all over my body just thinking about it.
