I looked at a bunch of different layouts and schematics when building both the Spitfire and Lightning.

The MV was wired wrong in several but didn't notice the pin 3 to PI issue.

Some times your better off just wiring the amp the way you think it should be and ignore those layouts. :)

Yes, and there is the one that has a.0022 cap where a .022 cap belongs.

Also Ceriatone has 2K2 on B+2 and 3 where it should be 22K.

I copied your later finds and labeled the files as "MFowler 1, 2, 3, etc".
You are the best reference yet!

Thanks.

Sound clip is clean, dialed down, but if you listen closley you'll hear what she has in store:

Used a power transformer from an old RCA console stereo that was already hacked up.
Output transformer from the "sidecar" portion of a honkin' huge Baldwin organ chassis that drove (2) EL84's at 8 ohms.
So after looking at several schems (including 18 watt TMB etc), I settled on a Spitfire.
Things got sloppy on the power transformer/choke side, and the OT, but that's where it also ran the quietest.

Thank you Mark, and thank you once again for your experience with the Spitfire builds!

I never did really figure out whether it was .022, or .0022.
Ended up with .0022 on this build and she does sound sweet.

Caveat though, she is no longer really a Spitfire.
I went for the 385VDC on B+1 with a 5U4GB, and it ran too hot for my taste, with a razor blade distortion when cranked up.
Dropped back to a 5Y3, dropping B+ to a more comfortable 325VDC, and not only is she much cooler, but gives up a great clean sound that mimics a 5E3 when wheeled up.

Fixed the sound clip link:

Just ran across the thread -- do you mean the first coupling cap? I've seen values down to .001. I can't hear too much of a difference, but mine's .002 now and it sounds good.
Any old tagline will do

That sounded great, nice tone, not trebly at all.

I was waiting for the fire breathing distortion. :P

Bumping this up as I am building a third.
MARK: I shamelessly saved pics of one of your Spitfire builds.
Noticed a switch on V1 bias cap...to a parallel bias cap.

How did that mod work out for you?

HI, i just joined. As a search for some spitfire info led me here. I just put one together using various prints. im not an electronics master but i can build stuff. previously built a bf champ and it works and sounds great.

IS there a real print?

This is sounding real good but is really chimey. ice pick. I would like to just take the edge off. The tone tone control seems useless mv works. How caps fuction is a mystery to me, so i don't know where to go. I changed out a few caps and i could not tell any difference, that being .0022 cap.

M Fowler i see your in MN. I'm in Faribault.

Thanks,
Todd

Was going to edit my previous post but text didn't come up.

What does this mean "Go with a PPIMV"

Here is a Matchless Spitfire gut shot.

You could use Marshall 18w values such as lowering the PI 1k2 to 860 or so.

The silver mica cap across the volume pot could be lowered to 47pf or so to less the treble.
