Re: 50 watt EL34 build questions
Here are some voltage readings I took this afternoon:
WALL VOLTAGE in Northampton MA @ 2:00pm on 4/23/15
122.5 VAC
B+ STRING:
1st filter cap - 455 VDC
2nd filter cap - 452 VDC
3rd filter cap - 390 VDC
4th filter cap - 368.1 VDC
5R4 rectifier tube PIN 2
5.31 VAC
EL34 output tube a
Plate - 451 VDC
Screen - 418 VDC
Grid - -36.37 VDC
Current via 1ohm resistor on PIN 1 - 31.7 mV
EL34 output tube b
Plate - 451 VDC
Screen - 418 VDC
Grid - -36.37 VDC
Current via 1ohm resistor on PIN 1 - 33.8 mV
12AX7 phase inverter
Plate PIN 1 - 271.5 VDC
Plate PIN 6 - 262.5 VDC
Grid PIN 2 - 40.1 VDC
Grid PIN 7 - 39.9 VDC
Cathodes (tied together) - 63 VDC
EF86 input
Plate PIN 6 - 149.7 VDC
Screen PIN 1 - 150.6 VDC
Cathode & Suppressor Grid (tied) - 3.5 VDC
Interesting to discover the EF86 screen voltage is slightly above the plate. I did not intend it to be this way, but I have heard of other builders utilize this deliberately, so I'm not worried. In another all octal amp I did w/6SJ7 input tube the screen voltage is far below the plate, and it sounds excellent. Hmm...
Also, BLT, the screen grid resistors feeding the EL34s are 5.6K 2 watt (you have them shown as 7.5K 2 watt) and I'm not sure but it looks like in your schematic there's a Vox style CUT control. The amp does not have this (although I bet it would sound cool), and the last revision I made was to change the 56K resistor in the bias circuit to 33K to allow a wider range in adjustment.
Can't wait to get this thing in the garage for a proper 'unleashed' demo

Re: 50 watt EL34 build questions
Killer, thanks again! So cool to have a schematic of this amp.
