I had one of this units that I bought brand new. I really liked the way it colored and added drive to my original 5F6A bassman. I used it for many years until a tube went out in the early 80s. After searching for months I gave up and sold it for quite a bit of cash, maybe $200. Considering I paid maybe $60-70 for it and it didn't work I thought I made out. Dummy me.

tunrs-out that there was grid current flowing in the input tube. The way the circuit was designed the cathodes are only 300mV or so above the grids. So, some grid current flows...and this current was flowing through my guitars volume pot...and that's why the scratchy sounds! THis also accounted for wqhy there was so much 60 cycle hum. The hum's gone now!
