I'd recommend the 5F..champ as a first build.
The 5E3 is easy enough, but the circuit is unlike most others...it doesn't do much to explain how things work together, because it's too interactive!
Great amp, though.
The AX84 site and projects are good, but sometimes unintentionally complicated by all the mods those guys are so good at. I built the SEL right off the print, and within hours I was tweaking it.
The next turned out to be a mating of the Core Series preamp and power amp...the SEL-2. It was an adventure, but I have learned a lot in the process!
Welcome to the club...not only do you have a lot of great pro's around here, but some other newbs like me that are walking in the same path.
Another site to check out is the Tone Lizard. Interesting, opinionated, and
amusing.

I'd like to thank Bankey for making this thread and the rest of you fine gents for being so generous with your answers.

Mojave Ampworks
So; One of you linked me to Mojave's website. Man! Now these amps are IM-PRESS-IVE!
I watched every video demo. I noticed on a photo gut shot that all the resistor and capacitor values are hidden. That sucks. I'd really like to build one of those. Does anyone know what amp this guy worked his circuit up from? Seems like a Trainwreck to me. But I wouldn't know yet.
I do know that I saw alot of features on his amps that I really like.
But... I don't have that kind of dough. So I want to build something as good. I'm probably going to do the 5E3 kit for my first one. But I want (and need) something that can growl! I'm tired of running pedals through my twin reverb. I'll always keep it. It's the best clean amp I've ever had.
So what's the vote on what I should do first? An ODS or TW?
Ok. Fine. I'll do both. But which one first? Lol.
Where can I get some info on tweaks and mods in idiot version? You know, "by switching this resistor or cap. here, it'll make it sound this way" type of info?

What Mojave amp are you talking about?
As far as mods and tweak, you will have to read a lot of threads.
It's all pretty much been discussed here.
The Trainwreck and ODS are both fairly complex builds.
If your electronic knowledge isn't very great you will have trouble.
A kit is the way to go for the first time builder as has been mentioned.
You just have to decide which way to go.
Marshall type or Fender type with a few types in between.
Also if you have never built anything, you will want a kit that comes with instructions unless you can follow a schematic and layout as your only instructions.

New question;
I have an opportunity to grab up a Peavey classic 50 head. It mostly works. The only knob that does anything is the master volume. Everything seems to have no effect.
My question is:
Since it seems to have working transformers, a chassis, and a cabinet; Do you guys think it would be worth maybe $100 to buy it, gut it, and put some other circuit in there? If so; What do you suggest? I was thinking something Marshall. A 45 or a Plexi, superlead. Whatever. Something that does the "Clean to Mean" pretty easy. Something somewhat easy. I'd really appreciate some input on this. As far as sourcing parts. I have to learn sometime. I have Mouser and Allied catalogs. I have more bookmarks on my laptop than I know what to do with. I'm talking something easy to almost easy. Something I can play around with and tweak and learn on.
As far as above, the Mojave amps. I liked all of them. I think If I were to only buy one?..; right now it would be the peacemaker. I have no organic distortion. I have a 94 twin that I love. But it has no balls. But it's super clean!
