I wouldn't leave my phone laying around if you guys were expected to be close. Next call I get takes it out of standby, the ringtone is 118db.. but I am sure it would sound sweet.
Re: Best transformations of useless crap category..........
I think Aleks ought to be awarded post of the week. Out of nowhere, a 1st rate amp fix-up and video clips!!!
Re: Best transformations of useless crap category..........
Yes the matcher counts and wow what a nice job too. Very tidy.
Maybe certified government wire-er tidy.
That Sunn is no fair. They were supposed to be flaky looking on the inside.
My Solarus had a Dyna MK amp board inside, plus a SS trem on a PCB, plus some Sunn specific wiring to boot. Yours is all nice and stuff ---cool.
Ragnar be proud !
Now in Dutch, niemand means no-one or nobody.
Is Aleks getting all Nietzsche on us ?

I forgot the link. Here's the story on the tube matcher. You can build one too.

Re: Best transformations of useless crap category..........
I don't know, maybe. The family legend says my ancestors sort of adopted this name a generation or two after the Spanish Inquisition, when they found a temporary safe haven in one of Germanic states. Apparently they were one stubborn and persistent bunch characterized by the motto: "Niemand ist Mein Meister" (Nobody is my Master). That first word stuck as family name. I carry it proudly.chopstuck wrote: Now in Dutch, niemand means no-one or nobody.

Glad you guys approve of my Warrior Resurrection. I don't do many restorations as the cost is often more than market value of the amp. Some amps are worth the cost nevertheless. I have a couple clients owning old beat-up classics that they insist on keeping fully functional and road worthy.

Here's a Knight model 93 PA head converted to a Fender 5e5-ish circuit:

[IMG:800:600]http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f112/ ... t93002.jpg[/img]
This is from several yrs ago---- the amp was bought by a local recording studio (not for its looks)--- was used for a couple of yrs then sold to one of their customers----then later bought back by a recording tech from the same studio who took it on a regional tour with some band--- running through an Avatar 2x12 that i supplied him with thru a trade for a Vox 4x12 (made in Vietnam---i still have it--- but now it runs WGS CL80's).
This is the last PA conversion that i used the orig transformers (i'm amazed that these have lasted yrs after pics were taken----the iron and associated orig wiring looks pretty bad).
I've done many PA conversions since this one but usually gut everything and use new iron to start out with----- often Super Reverb-type PT's from CE when i want to use a tube rec.
I recently re-did an older Knight head for another guy but it's much better looking and has all new iron, etc---also just finished a Challenger 30 conversion with a 6L6GC x 2, 5U4GB rec, Princeton Reverb-type circuit (no reverb but has the reverb recovery stage), fixed bias.
No pics of the last two mentioned---these sell as soon as they're finished to locals.
Right now i'm rebuilding a Sound City 120 that i got in partial trade for a rebuilt Bogen CHB35A-to-hotrodded Plexi conversion (no pics of this one either)--- this SC 120 had a Stancor 100 watt OT pushing EL34 x 4 and somebody gutted the orig circuit and tried to build some Marshall-type something inside---some of the worst amp work i've ever seen---- the ground wire for the bias circuit came loose (bad solder joint) and it fried the EL34's and also carbon arced an output socket between the plate and heater pins.
I gutted everything except the good orig Partridge PT and orig Cliff speaker jacks--- and I'm building up an Early 70's 4-Input Hiwatt circuit------- i had a spare SC 120 OT (orig Partridge) and i'm using new Hiwatt-type turret boards I had on hand for scratch built Hiwatt clones that few around where i live are interested in. A local band wants this one for bass guitar use when it's finished.................................gldtp99
PS--- here a link to a Facebook pic of the 40's Knight i rebuilt and sold to the band "Mammal Virus"--- link below.
The pic has altered made to look "antique"--- the amp has been repainted---black on the bottom and Rust-olem Textured gray on top---it looks good----- only the amp shell was re-used (and two orig gray Dakaware chickenhead knobs), everything is new inside---circuit is very similar to the green Knight above--- 6L6GC x 2, cathode biased.
I can sell these rebuilt pieces of old crap, locally, almost as fast as i can make them---- but some very nicely built 'real' amps sit here and gather dust---such as a mostly Metro 50 watt Plexi---looks great, sounds great--- but they want old rebuilt pieces of crap instead--- i don't get it.

That is a very cool color on the Knight.
Weren't those sold as kits back in the day?

Thanks, Alex I guess the rest of us will have to be satisfied with being named after physical locations, topographical features, parts of buildings and skill sets.
I like your story better.

I have two similar Knights here but without the turntable---- they are two-tone gray and hammered silver with gray knobs instead of the greenish color of the one in the pic.
I'll rebuild them one day---i also have a very cool old Webster 6L6 x 2 awaiting a rebuild (has enough pot spaces to do a 5F6-A/Marshall-type build)-----also a couple of Stromberg-Carlsons, a Rauland, a Bell, and some Bogens and other Knights--- all waiting to be re-done.
Another approach i sometimes take is to use the iron from 60's-70's PA heads in new builds----- here's a SE 6L6GC 10 watter using iron pulled from a Bogen CHB10A----modded Marshall #36-type preamp:

...speaking of tung oil, I found a use for my little bottle of it this week.
The drummer's parent's held onto this empty bug condo for decades. After hosing it out I added a Bell phono/tuner chassis, a Weber 10-inch speaker, and some leftover radio dial glass.
[before]

[after]

I've replaced 5 or 6 caps, swapped in two old 6L6s and an SS plug-in module [for the 6V6s and 5Y3]...also some glass 6V preamp tubes for the noisier metal body ones. It still runs cool [so far] and sounds strong and clear.
I'll have to add handles. It seems a little impractical compared to a small Tolex combo, but I couldn't resist that old radio wood.

Cool!
I had an old radio cab I got from my grandfather.
It was gutted and he used it to store some fishing tackle.
I was going to try to restore it but it got lost in a move years ago.
It had some really nice veneer on it.
I think this was the family radio where they would gather around and listen to their favorite shows.
