the wires going to that jack still join the speakers.

Yeah, mixing speakers will never tell you the actual performance of any single speaker, even from very close on a single speaker. 4x12s are full of deep resonant standing waves that cancel certain frequencies, and then the times of arrival in that .35 second resonant until the cabinet stops reflecting from front to back and then front again in the 100s of Hz.

This is not even considering your position in relation to the separated speakers, mixed efficiency ratings from singles, or pairs of different manufacture. 4x12 cancel phase in a narrow angle, and have a very muted off-axis response in general.

another is if it's sealed as it should be, the dead speakers or pairs are dampening the live ones... and thuddy because of overtly large internal volume.

I saw someone killed by a poorly mixed set of speakers. He was consumed in seconds as if eaten by a giant bird from another planet. We found his bones in a giant furry poop package, like it might have been an owl.

Ok, we never actually saw this happen, but he said he'd see us later, and it's been like a week.

You can make a front loading 1x12 cabinet in about no time with next to nothing. ;)

I was told on another forum that I need to short circuit the speakers that are not on in order to prevent their cones from moving - like this:

But how do I solve also having the 16 ohm 4x12 option?

The picture above does not prevent the speaker from moving any better then the first picture I posted.
By not applying voltage to the speaker it does not move.
However in a pressurized / sealed enclosure the force of a speaker that is recieving power and sharing the same box volume (chamber, enclosure, etc) will cause the unpowered speaker to move to some degree.

unused speakers do not require a dummy load or short they are passive.

If you don't want another speaker to interact with a single speaker you need to seal each speaker in it's own enclosure.

To achive a 16ohm load you would need to add phase switch in line with the on / off switch for each speaker. I suggest you also add points before the speaker jack so you can meter for ohm load so you don't blow your amp in the event you have a dangerous impedance mis match.

Well, that's a pretty great example of generosity with your time. Thanks!

I can see that the DPDT's will flip the phase of each speaker, but they will always be wired in parallel, no?

Yes, they're always in parallel.

You, my friend, are a nut!! ;)

He could have built 4 front loaded 1x12s by now. lol. Constantly.. just sayin'...

Yes, there's always going to be some interaction of nearby speakers.
Shorting the VC of those not in circuit will damp much (but not all) of the passive resonance.

Variation on the "simple" switch array, shorts only in parallel (?)
