They are film and foil caps similar to mallory 150s.
Mark please let me know how they work out!

I'm really curious

Will do but first I have to figure out which amp I want to use them in.

Mark, I'm really curious to know what caps you used in your Z-wreck. :D

The first one I used 6PS with mostly CF resistors.

The second one I am currently building and will be using 6PS with MF resistors.

I am going to try determine what DCR I need in the choke rather then going with the standard 15h Hammond 158L in the Rocket in the second wreck build.

Decisions decisions!!

I have had good luck with that Hammond choke before

Z told me to use one of the 2 6V6 chokes that Mojotone makes for my half Rocket

I like to try out any given type in a simple amp to see what the presentation is.

I tend to like foil/oil ...

Its best to have a few different types around to audition in what ever your noodling with.

I was fiddling with a high gain toned pre where a ceramic cap gave the best tone
for whatever reason, and I don't prefer them, but that type in that circuit was just so.

Its your amp, use your ears and try not to make assumptions.

Any comments regarding in which position in the topology that the type/style/flavor of cap is most critical/sensitive/revealing?

The less caps in the circuit the more the type will color.

The first cap of the circuit can be critical, the value, the type, and the
impedance of the stage shapes whatever comes after.

don't sweat it, try out different types when you get the chance.
You can even put a little RC filter in front of the home stereo amp and listen to program.

I have been considering trying some of the Gen II Sonicaps.

Boy, I hate to mention this, but I just trashed a couple of boxes of NOS green Sangamo and old Mica caps. Been sitting on them for years, but found they were too unreliable for the repair work I do. I put them up on ebay a few months ago in the old cigar boxes I had them in, but nobody bid anything for them, so I just put them in the trash. If I run across any more of these, I'll post it here to see if anyone wants them.

I like the wima's a lot. If you can still get some of the old polycarbonate boxes they are smaller and easier to work with.

Auricaps are great for how much they cost.

Saw a chance to do a little vintage spelunking this month though...

just couldn't resist.

just so much prettier and easier to work with then anything available today.

Bumping an old thread. :)

I'm starting on a build in the next few days, and am going to experiment with a few caps. The amp is basically a Top Hat Club Royale with a few changes (a little higher filtering in the power amp, 4 EL84 instead of 2), and I've got some Solen Fast Caps on the way. Being that I typically use Mallory 150's, anyone got any comparison between the two?

STK KP80 or KP80S are my favorites. I've got loads of them if anyone is interested in trying them out.
