Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
If you like Canare GS-6 cable Redco sells it for $.80/ ft.
KVC wants $1.53/ ft for the same cable.

Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
I make my star quad instrument cables differently...
18 feet Canare star quad cable. ( or less... ) Rarely longer.
Neutrik or Switchcraft connectors.
Heat shrink tubing.
I pair ( 2 same color ) conductors to tip both ends.
Other pair ( 2 other color ) conductors to sleeve both ends.
Shield to sleeve - One end only.
Good luck

Please understand that IMO an answer to this question is of no practical relevance at all. - Max
Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
You guys get together and start making guitar cords for us to buy because I hate making my own. Thank you in advance.
Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
Funny forum to ask if anyone makes their own cables, pretty much everyone here has a soldering jones.
Don't forget the thin black anti-microphonic shield in the GS6 and Mogami - it's conductive and must be cut back with the braid. I came late to this knowledge. I think the Canare GS6 is much more flexible than the Mogami 2524 so whoever said it's better live, I agree, but both are incredible quality and price is honest - hard to find these days of hype.

I agree, the George-L stuff is great for pedal boards where the connections are not manipulated very often. I have a bunch of it in a high end switching system and it has worked flawlessly for years and it was comparatively low cost.
I was looking at Redco. I don't see any standard, straight 1/4" connectors? I see straight silent and right angle types only.

Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
Thanks for the link Tom. Sorry, I wasn't specific enough in my previous post. I am looking for Switchcraft straight plugs without the silent feature.
Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
I've soldered a lot of plugs on cables over the years and the Neutrik and Amphenol plugs are the best IMHO.
I really like the strain relief on the Neutrik, really holds the cable well.
But, I know everybody has their preference.
The REDCO HP2C looks similar to the Switchcraft plug.

Structo, which Neutrik plugs (straight & angled) do you like specifically?Structo wrote:I've soldered a lot of plugs on cables over the years and the Neutrik and Amphenol plugs are the best IMHO.

This is a very timely thread indeed, as I was just going to place a large order for some cables, but choked @ the (seemingly) unreasonable high prices.
TIA, Geezer
Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
The Neutrik plugs have a plastic chuck that fits over the cable, when the end is screwed on it compresses the chuck to hold the cable firmly in the housing.
Most all the other brand plugs simply use the metal type that you bend over the cable, which doesn't hold the cable near as well.
I've never had a Neutrik plug fail from daily use or abuse.

Another trick you can do to increase cable toughness is to build the cable and fill the connector internals with epoxy. It really helps keep those wires from breaking. I really only do this with short stompbox cables though as those see more abuse than my regular cables.

So which end gets the shield that is connected to the ground?
The source (guitar?)
The source (guitar?)

Re: Anyone making their own guitar cables??
In my experience it really doesn't matter, but traditionally it goes to the lower impedance source (the guitar).
