Have you found this yet...

www.frugel-horn.com

I built a speaker pair based on the chang using 8'' guitar spkr and mdf for
less than 25$. They dont need a sub. Ive tried smaller drivers and have
been pleasantly surprised, even 5w consumer cheese from walmart sounds good.

I've found it long time ago, as I've been a member of the forum where it first surfaced for many years. This is one of the combinations that can be very useful with lower powered amps. The models presented there may be somewhat cumbersome for guitar, though, as most of them end up being quite large.
These loudspeakers are now termed BVRs - big vent reflex. They can be particularly useful with tube amps, as these amps typically have a higher output resistance ( not impedance!) than typical SS amps, and this further enhances the low frequency response from an otherwise smallish speaker.

BTW - I've always wondered why guitarists somehow seem to prefer the rather higher low frequency rolloff that almost all open back cabs have...??? The frequency response of most typical cabs of this kind is really quite bad! Maybe this could be the topic of a separate thread....??

I hate open back setups myself, everything I own and use is semi or closed back. The open back 40's PA box that I use as a holder for my test speaker is bright with any amp I put at it and completely lacks in bass.

I'll post some pics of my Fishers later, they really are some great speakers. I figured out what was wrong with my setup before, the computer I was using to drive the amp (using a top of the line X-Fi soundcard) sounded piss poor because it was setup for 5.1 channels. I was essentially using my two speakers as the fronts and it completely lacked in mids (handled by the center speaker).

Once I fixed this and did a little EQ'ing, this amp sounded absolutely amazing! Not the greatest for all genres but it really puts you in the music with softer acoustic/ambient music. One of my favorite acoustic artists is Elliott Smith and having listened to his CD's thousands of times now, it's cool to hear the same music with a new perspective. The sound was described by my girlfriend as full and airy (STRONG bass) which I think is thanks to the cathode biased amps natural compression and the Stancor A3310's being great transformers. I guess hifi guys also talk a lot about the imaging and this thing definitely does a good job of putting you in the music, even if it's only outputting a few Watts.
