Thanks Brian I will think this project over and see what I come up with.

One thing that will happen is take out all the mods, from there where it goes I am not sure at this time.

Make it that amp you always wanted to own. I did all the torres stuff many years ago and found out going down the long road only to realize all that stuff is unnessary to make a killer amp. I do think the torres stuff is great for a learning process of what does not work HA HA HA.

You have a great platform to work with once you strip the preamp......Make it happen !!!!!!!

Mark,

I know what happened my brain was disengaged again. I was confusing you with odourboy his name is Brian. :)

Edit: I started an Ampgarage user name log on my CPU as it is too confusing when I get email from AG people and then have to remember their user name here. Mine is simple. :)

I had an early Torres "Super Texan." That was a sad phase of my life. What a crappy amp. He could never get it to sound anything like his showroom model - what garbage. The floating parts board, no apparent attention to lead dress, yards of shielded cable... Even the custom hardwood cabinet fell apart and had to be replaced.

Fizz, buzz...

The good news is that the experience propelled me to do my own amp work. Thanks, Dan!

Bottom line: Rip out the mods and give the poor amp a chance.
Yeah the "Super Texan" was what I modded recently - I can't believe I'd never been in a Torres amp before when I had my repair biz. If I had, I would not have agreed to modify one. It was basically a complete redo including almost everything in the signal path, all the controls, transformers, filter caps and heater wiring. Once I was halfway through the process and it still sounded horrid I realized (too late) It would have been easier to gut the thing and install a new main board. Live and learn. It did turn out great in the end but should have cost the owner twice as much as I charged.

AB763 AA763

Post by angelodp »

I have a 66 Deluxe Reverb I am working on, I think AB 763 but it has some elements that are closer to the Super Reverb. Instead of the two hole feed from the filter cap box ( tube side ) there is one feed hole with two wires that takes the B+ to the optocoupler and the other wire to the reverb tranny /red wire. Just curious if any have seen this as my research of layouts shows two feed holes not the single one I have here. Just trying to zero in on which schematic this amp is. Did not mean to hijack... I'll post a new thread on this.

It's just astounding that after years of turning out this trash, that people still send him business.

Andy this amp sounds god aweful no matter what tubes a guy substitutes, a nasally sound, hurts my ears. :D

Thinking I should send it to Henry Heisthl since he really enjoys working on these type of projects in his spare time. :)

On second look I don't think this one has the dreaded UL trannys. The output label says 45watts. Which is a good sign.

Rewire to Pre CBS and I am sure it will sound tons better. One of the few mods That I think sounds really good in these, is to convert the power tubes to EL34. I know they draw more heater current. But, on all the Fenders I have seen it done too, the PT handles it well.

I think Henry has the right Idea, Just gut it and start over with a new board. Probably faster and cleaner.

I have a friend that met Dan years ago and was talked into going into business with him. It did not work out so well. My impression is , he (DT) is a very good salesman. And his work speaks for itself.

We've done our share of rebuilds on these as well.

This amp had 2 different style of power tube wiring triode/pentode and single ended vs push pull, two hammond output transformers, and plenty of hum and motor-boating, lots of parts flying in space, scary shit....

:) Andy - was that the after picture?
seriously, at least the one in your picture had heater wires good enough for the pre's - some use what looks like 28 gauge even for the output tubes.
