Help w/ Silvertone

Post by nam4b »

I recently purchased a Sears Silvertone 1482 combo amp, and it was in beautiful working condition when I bought it. All 12-15 watts were purring beautifully. After making the long journey home in the band van, it now will not reach full volume consistently when I turn it all the way up. It doesn't oscillate in volume regularly, but will jump to full volume briefly and then crackle back down to about 20% of the volume it should be at. The tubes are still the originals.
The lamp also went out during its breakdown, so I replaced it and now it works, but still no full volume...

Ideas?

Do you know how to work on tube amps safely such as discharging filter caps? If you don't then please take it to an amp tech Assuming you do ..........

What specifically happened to the amp in the van?

I would replace the filter caps if they are original. IF they are original, then they need replacing.

Are the voltages reading close to what the schematic says.

If the caps are replaced already, then I would try new tubes that you know are good. Including the rectifier tube.

I would "chop stick" solder joints with a non-conductive chopstick to see if anything crackles or changes in volume.

That would be my starting place & probably in that order.

While theres a lot of poking around you could do....

If it happened in transit its likely a bad tube. If not it would have to be from components shifting around or a broken wire.
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

All the tubes seated? Could have jarred one loose. Or as mentioned a bad tube. I'd start there as well.
