What should I do with my 1964 Bassman?

Post by Tonegeek »

I have a '64 Bassman head. Its a 6g6b circuit I think. It has a presence control, black tolex, black numbered panel with new period correct replacement white knobs. It is factory SS rectified but has a plate over the original tube socket hole (guess Fender has some leftover chassis punched for the tube recto to use up). It has the wrong grill cloth, but other than that, it appears to be stock. I did change out the choke and it has been re-capped (PS, bias, and cathodes)

The amp has a wonderful clean sound using the normal channel (B). Really has sweet breakup when cranked. I just would not use this amp much so it sits there. I was thinking I should restore it to original specs as much as possible. Any ideas?

Turn the pre into a Marshall JCM-800 2204. They will never see it coming.
Like deer in the headlights. That sure is a sweet looking old fender, BAMMM.

Please don't mod a '64 blackface anything. People collect those actually. Get it restored as close as possible to original; maybe even look for an original bottom, and sell it. That amp and a same day purchase bandmaster were the amps used by my first ever band. The bassman was by far the favorite for everything. We went on to a twin for the lead guy and I always felt powerless with the bandmaster. Just kinda invisible back there.

Buy a big ol' Gretsch and pretend you're Brian Setzer?!
I believe in this and it's tested by research...

Tonegeek,

Didn't you say you wanted ideas on restoring the old amp? Well, I'm not sure what you mean by that without a picture to go by.
