Output tranny secondary switch

Post by dynosoar1 »

Does adding a switch between the OT and the speaker affect tone? I have taps for 5K and 8K for optimizing 6V6's or 6L6's and was wondering if placing a switch will eat tone.

I can just run direct and switch wires if I switch tubes if it does but was wondering if anyone has experience or input doing this. Thanks.

Quite a few D'Lite amp owners/ builders have done exactly that.
Put a DPDT on the primaries.

I had it in my amp for a while.

But then due to some other changes and the fact that I only want to run 6L6's in this amp I took it out.
Then I installed a new Prosonic OT that only has one primary winding anyway.

If you do it and it's on a D'Lite, the common location is to put the switch where the bias pot is located and then relocate the bias pot over between the PT and back of chassis.

One word of caution, never flip the switch when the amp is powered up!

I accidentally flipped my switch one day when I was monkeying around with the amp.
Some pretty good sparks out of that switch and it may have damaged my OT a little. Quite the light show!

What I did was install the Prosonic OT and I also modded my amp with two bias pots, one for each power tube.

Actually...the taps are on the secondary winding. Mercury Tweed deluxe 59M. Green (Ground...right?) and Yellow for 5k and yellow/white for 8k. Was just going to run each wire to an on/on switch and then to the jack.

I think one of us is confused.

The 5K and 8K taps would be the primaries.

The secondaries will have several colors for different impedance speakers.
Like 4, 8, 16.

A lot of OT's use yellow for 4 ohm, Green for 8 ohm and Orange for 16 ohm.
Then there would be a ground wire usually black.

I'm pretty sure that OT does have dual 8ohm secondaries.

A switch should work just fine - I wouldn't expect any tone loss.

My bad, sorry for the confusion.
I hadn't seen that one before.

I think it will be fine since its low voltage there and I'm going to put it inside so theres no accidental switching....thanks for all the help guys....Cheers
