Another factor not yet mentioned is one specific benefit to the top mounted hanging tubes:
You can have the head cab designed like the old vintage Traynor amp heads. You unscrew the four top bolts on the cab and then lift the handle and the top of the cab comes off. You then have direct access to the inside of your chassis while the head cabinet acts like an amp cradle. The amp made for techs by techs. Ingenious and convenient. An amp tech never whines when he is brought a 70s Traynor.

Also gotta love that if you remove the top, you usually find the schematic glued inside. I don't know when they started doing that - I've met a couple of older ones that had no drawing. It should be the law!

Getting the hot air out is the main problem, regardless. 100W Marshalls usually have the beer grate on top, but still overheat. You won't see the metal rear panel on a lot of them.

That's a nice idea!bcmatt wrote:Another factor not yet mentioned is one specific benefit to the top mounted hanging tubes:

Re: benefits of amp hanging down or standing up?
Does this also mean the layout of the various boards needs to be reversed to maintain lead dress?

I don't think so, I will just flip the amp over.
So the inputjack wil be on the right side instead of the left side.
And flip the switches upside down too.
As far as I know, no big deal.
I do have to make new faceplates but that doesn't bother me.
(It's time to design them though
 )

Re: benefits of amp hanging down or standing up?
I was thinking about those cases where one would want to keep the Input on the left hand side. I am designing a scratch built chassis, and much prefer that layout.

Sounds much better that way.rmb550 wrote:I was thinking about those cases where one would want to keep the Input on the left hand side. I am designing a scratch built chassis, and much prefer that layout.
I do too, actually, not sure why, just the left-to-right progression we've had drilled into our heads from our writing system maybe. I like to set up my pedals that way too, even though the cabling goes haywire when you do that.
Life is a tale told by an idiot -- full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I also prefer that lay out. But my amp is allready build.rmb550 wrote:I was thinking about those cases where one would want to keep the Input on the left hand side. I am designing a scratch built chassis, and much prefer that layout.
If I was you, I would also put the inputs left.
