:?: That looks like normal gibson wiring. The middle position on the switch should put both pups in parallel and in phase.

Nasal mid position

Post by angelodp »

Ok, perhaps the pups are mis-wired at the base. I am getting a very nasal and clucky mid position.... not very useable.

Could be a reversed magnet in one of the pickups. Similar to the Peter Green effect. I have an old 345 stereo that the pickups have reversed magnets, Factory. You only hear it in the middle position, both pickups.

Ya this is a possability. If you have a small magnet you can place it near the adjustment screws(6 of them) on the pup and it should attract or repell. then it should do the opposite if you place the magnet near the other pole peices or the other side of the pup. THEN the same situation should happen on the other pup. If the pole adjustments attract on one pup and repell on the other........hello Peter Green.

 Aren't those things easily de-magnetized?

I don't see any problem with a little pea sized magnet. I think alnicos are pretty "permanent". have you seen the ways pups are shipped

I use a cubscout's compass.
Same idea, a small, magnetized piece of metal.

mismatched - Peter Green

Post by angelodp »

Ok well with the magnet I do have opposing force on the pairs but the two pups do not match. One pup attracts on the screws the other pup is on the poles. So i looks like the pups are mismatched.

Whats my option. New pickup that matches. I took a close look at the wiring on the HB'ers and the wires look pretty fragile to re-solder.

You can flip the magnet in one of the pups or maybe take it to a guitar tech. http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/barmagswap.htm
Or buy a new set. Chevk out WCR's

goodbye peter green

Ok, thanks for all the help here... billyz & stoo ... you rock. Its done and I flipped the magnet. One thing they do not tell you on that great site that stoo posted is that you should also pull out the bobbin pickup screws as well as the 4 little gold screws on the back to get the pup apart. There is an armature that sticks to the magnet and has to be pulled off when the magnet gets flipped, then goes to the other side. OK then, new tone on the split position... onward.

See this for a very clear view of things. BTW the pickup will be quite sticky with old wax.... just have a rag with naptha around to clean up your fingers as you go.
