I've digested all the placement issue comments the last couple of days, and in the interest of being fair I've decided to redo the "after" part of the first vid. The new vid is also much shorter. Now both takes are from the same camera position, amp settings, signal chain, cables etc. I'll admit that the difference is not as pronounced, but in this new vid I still hear a tighter bass responcese and what I would think is a "sweeter" tone. Depending on your speakers you may have different results. I'm still hearing more of an improvement live in the room as apposed to the audio on the vid, a good condenser mic would pick up more detail, but for now, I'm just not willing to put the Orange drops back in and start from scratch.

I think the Jupitors sound a bit smoother, meatier/fatter as well as a little more detailed. better all around.

Which OD's did you use? There are at least 50 varieties of OD's and I find the differences pretty dramatic.

I had SBE 715P OD's in there before the JupitersBob-I wrote:Which OD's did you use? There are at least 50 varieties of OD's and I find the differences pretty dramatic.

That explains a lot. I've found them to be very harsh. I'd be interested in the comparison between Jupiters and 6PS OD's.gtr777 wrote:I had SBE 715P OD's in there before the JupitersBob-I wrote:Which OD's did you use? What I heard was that the Jupiters are much more transparent and smooth. There's less nasty grain in the mids.
Thx for the vid, very telling, nice sounding amp too.

What Bob said about sums up my thoughts as well.
There are times when I'd like that extra grain, but for your style of playing (which is very good by the way), I think the Jupiters sure made a positive change in tone!
Good jost on fixing the video to make it more apples to apples.

Yes, it just depends on what kind of tone you are after.
Take a Dumble for example, it is supposed to be grainy and honky.
That's probably why HAD used the orange drops in the first place.

HAD never used 715's. Mostly he used 6PS but there are many other style included. Most of the grain in the Dumble comes from the ceramic treble caps.Structo wrote:Yes, it just depends on what kind of tone you are after.

Remember the "Orange drop" is just the coating and has nothing to do with the electrical construction of the cap. There are maybe 40-50 types of OD caps.
But again, the Jupiters really sweeten up this amp.

Or it could have simply been that those caps were what he thought were the best of what was available at the time.Structo wrote:Yes, it just depends on what kind of tone you are after.
