Hey all!
I serviced some old amps and now in my latest win, an ELK Inc. Twin Amp 60, there are the same parts: ATLAS caps and resistors. Just out of curiosity: what are these resistors and second, are they usuable / good / etc?

Re: ATLAS caps and resistors
They look OK to me, but what do I know?
I wonder, those Altas caps seem to be labeled "OIL". If these are oil filled caps, you can probably sell them on eBay to the audiophool market for big dollars.
New and similar could be http://www.angela.com/catalog/capacitor ... a_PIO.html

Re: ATLAS caps and resistors
I suspect for dumble clone you would be happier with orange drops or xicon coupling caps.
I tried PIO once in a dumble, did not like it too much. I think funk also tried it too, with same decision I made. (funk?)
It just seemed a tad unstable, and the harmonic mix was not quite right.
but yes, PIO is worth some dollars on ebay.

it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

Good news and bad news... those Jap caps are "good enough" in amps they were originally used in, you'll also see them in vintage Univox, Lafayette, Panasonic and Matsushita among others. They work well and seem to last long enough.Phil_S wrote:I wonder, those Altas caps seem to be labeled "OIL". The bad news: Audiophools are incredibly brand sensitive, they're willing to pay big bucks for the leading brand, they won't pay a dime for something the herd doesn't normally consume. Go figure!
That Elk is a fun toy and a period piece, it is what it is. It's not a Dumble or even a good source for parts for a Dumble clone.

Oh, I don't know. That terminal board looks pretty cool, too.Bernardduur wrote:The chassis is nice

Does it have a voltage double power supply? A lot of Japanese amps had 'em.

Re: ATLAS caps and resistors
IME those Japanese oils always leak or end up leaking (often blue, grey with "CP" or "CP-C" markings). Personally I would not buy any unless they were pennies ea. and going in a gtr. or something where no voltage would be on them. Same with some of the W.Euro and American oils also, excepting the hermetically sealed (Vitamin Q, etc.). So I would check them as well as the micas. The resistors are an old type. I have no idea how they hold up over time. The board can cause problems also ("tweed disease") since they can absorb moisture and turn into resistors through carbonization (heat or burning) but maybe in a dry climate they probably hold up better I'd guess.
