12AT7 Push-Pull Reverb Driver

Post by W5FH »

Hello-
I am wanting to try a push-pull reverb driver using center tapped transformer in a build to replace the parallel 12AT7 reverb driver. The intent is to have a clean tank driver and by using push-pull core saturation is of less problems. In past I used the Edcor reverb driver transformer with parallel 12AT7, this is a good quality gapped SE transformer, but a little more expensive.
My plans are to use one of the Musical Power Supplies transformers, the OT5PP+USA. This is 22.5K primary center tapped. Secondary is 4,8,16 ohm. I want to try this transformer with the Merlin 12AT7 phase inverter reverb driver circuit. Attached is the circuit. Sorry but could not attach the OT5PP+USA data sheet.
I will have about 2.6 VRMS at 1 Khz drive to this circuit when volume control is near 50% as a guide to my drive level. Plan on about 400 VDC to transformer center tap. I plan to put a 1 meg dwell pot ahead of it. My reverb drive signal from preamp is coming off of a 500 pf coupling cap so this will be going to top end of 1 meg dwell pot. Should I leave C1 at 470 pf. or enlarge it some?
have looked at 12AT7 load lines but am not comfortable with my own work here. Can someone offer their suggestions of an exact circuit? I could even apply feedback but not sure if that is going overboard.
Thanks for help.

Merlin's circuit should work as is. I would leave C1 at 470pF and maybe increase the 500pF coupling cap. You don't need R5 and your tank should be type 4AB3C1B.

Thanks sluckey -
Gotcha on all. Another question - I have attempted to approximate the voltage gain of circuit but not certain. Might I ask you if you feel this circuit is going to supply more or less power in the secondary of reverb transformer as the standard Fender parallel 12AT7 with 2.2K Rk fully bypassed, with same driving voltage. I realize the transformers themselves could play a role. That Edcor SE 22.5K to 8 ohm one I have used in past with parallel 12AT7 circuit has a gapped core and is a good quality unit rated at 3.5 watts. This MPS push-pull one is a good one too based on my research, plus I will be avoiding polarizing core DC with push-pull.
Thank you.

I have no idea. Merlin has been active on Hoffman's forum lately. Why not ask him?
