My EVM-12L with D'Lite 22?

Post by doveman »

Loving my D'Lite 22 and mostly running it through my 2x10 cabinet.

However, I've got an EVM-12L from the '80s that I've been using with my Boogie amp. I've been feeling that it was sounding harsh with the D'Lite but I spent some time with it tonight and got some better sounds with it.

Mostly, getting out from directly in front of it helped. I also got some pretty good sounds out of combinations with the 2x10.

The tone controls and the EVM relate a bit differently than the Boogie. I think the answer is in the way I'm handing the bass. It could be that removing the Bass Mod might clean it up a little and I haven't tried that yet. I intend to try that adjustment sometime this week.

Has anyone got some ideas for getting good sounds out of an EVM with the D'Lite 22. I know they are in there ... I've seen some improvement with a couple of things I've done so far.

I know the EVM is OK ... it still sounds great with the Boogie. I realize this is a 22w amp and a 220w speaker ... but the Boogie doesn't really challenge the EVM either. I have always got good sounds out of the EVM at low and high volumes.

Any ideas? Again ... it just seems a bit harsh ...

I have beam blockers on almost all of my speaker cabs. Try a ~4" diameter coffee can lid or similar. Tape it on with scotch tape. You'll get the rough idea that it knocks out the really nasty on-axis spikiness. I'm no fan of BBQ-boy, however, that is a good product.

I've never really thought of that ... worth a try maybe. Thanks.

Excellent ... I have not removed the bass mod yet to try. It's fairly simple and reversible ... but not yet.

I also found that the EVM sounded pretty good with the 2x10 Eminence cabinet. So ... if I want to pair them up it's good.

I look forward to your feedback.

As for the beam blockers. In the 70's I used JBL's in a Twin. I took 2 paper plates, cut them down to about 4" diameter and painted them black. I actuall sewed them into the grill cloth inside between the grill and the speaker. The difference was dramatic. I could tilt the amp back on the legs and point it right at my head so I could play a lower volume and still hear myself. Really great tone, I never should've sold that amp.

Update: I ordered some grill cloth and replaced the grille cloth on my 2x10 cabinet ... then on my old home-made 1x12 cabinet. It's kind of cool looking in this orientation ... same height for both cabs. It sounds pretty good using both cabs ... the EVM-12L is very balanced with no frequency spikes and low bass (at low volumes). The 1x12 alone can sound a bit harsh directly in front so I might try the beam blocker. The 2x10 Eminence Legend 10 cab has more mids and bass at low volume. Together they mix well and the EVM has some nice highs.

As a side, the Boogie sounds good at low volumes through the 2x10. It also sounds nice with both cabs, as well. 8-)

I'm still considering changing out one of the 10s for an Alnico but I may just leave it for now.

:D

Ordered a G12-65 ... sounding pretty good ... a bit darker tahn the EVM-12L but in a good way. I'm still amazed at the EVM-12L though ... first time it's been out of the cabinet in 25 years. What a mother of a speaker:

I have 3 EVM 15B's. I'd take a picture and show what a mother these things are, but I'd get a hernia.

I've played bass with a 60 watt head through just one of these with a full band and was heard all over. These are amazing speakers.

I've been on stage with my '78 Boogie and this thing when guys have got Marshalls with 4x12s and they can't believe what it can do. I run it in a sealed cabinet.

The thing is at low volumes with the D'Lite 22 and even with the Boogie, I'm just not pushing it. I mic the Boogie and run on 60w anyway when I play live and keep it turned down a bit ... still not pushing it.

Anyway the G12-65 has some nice qualities and you can tell it's not a 200w speaker like this guy.
