Houston, We Have A Problem.....

Post by zozoe »

Howdy all~ This is my wonderful Victoria Ivy League Fender Harvard clone, which with the direction of the great builder Mark, was tweaked to growl more like a Tweed Deluxe than it's Harvard design. GREAT!!

The only problem now is one that I've been plagued with only on some of my old 70 yr. old P.A. rebuilds, which is i had always been correctly advised was DC Grid Leakage,,, yà know, that ugly noise that accompanies the movement of the guitar’s volume pot, a variable resistor. Pots are good, tubes are good, & the same guitar will NOT have same affect on ANY of my other amps. My local tech, who's more of an all around electronics guy, but not a musician, did his usual stuff... Even after going back to him a 2nd time for the same issue, he couldn't kill the issue,,, and I'm really bummed.

In the photo, to the far left you can see the little cluster of a chicklet cap & a resistor. Before departing his shack, he gave me a .01 cap to put from my guitar's switch to the volume lug in the guitar in hopes of fixing the noise which typically happens between 8 & 10 on said volume pot. But what about my 20 other guitars?? This ain't right,, and annoying as all hell....
What to do now, folks? I don't touch this stuff, but my tech can easily follow any likely recommendations. FYI, those are the preamp tubes above his handywork...
a 6AV6 & a 12AX7.... Elsewhere, there's 2 6V6's & a 5Y3.

And, Mark, if yèr out there, please, chime in....🤔😏
Thanks in advance & something's gotta work, Kenny ॐ💃🪕

One cause can be too low a plate Voltage on the first tube. Below 100V is too low. Set bias for at least 150V.

I understand the added gridleak connected directly to the grid and the green cap, but why the second (third?) one on the board? I also don't understand the added series plate resistor.

That would be the first tube in the signal chain. See attachment.
