Polytone Mini Brute III loose part

Post by Rambostarr »

Hi! Picked up a Polytone Mini Brute III ~1987 nonfunctional at a yard sale. Have since made it produce sound by doing obvious solder repairs and wiring work. But have one loose part that came with it, no idea where it would belong. Hope someone here knows more then me, or can point me in right direction. Part is marked .01z ulr

This forum is focused mostly on tube amplifiers, this seems solid state. If you have a schematic, there may be some here that know enough to help. That does look like it might be a ceramic capacitor or some kind of input protection like a varistor or the like. Either way, if you have a schematic it can help a ton.

A .01 cap like that is many times used across the bridge rectifier diodes to snub turn on and turn off hash from the diodes.

It’s not absolutely needed if it did come from there, other wise you will need a schematic to find out where it’s home was if it indeed does belong in the circuit somewhere. If

You can find mini brute schematics at EL44 world.com.

The linked schematic is probably not the same as your amp but may provide a clue. There is a .01 cap on the power switch (upper left corner). The leads on your loose cap are long enough to have been on a power switch. Your cap definitely was not removed from the circuit board. Examine your power switch to see if there are lead stubs left on the switch from someone snipping the cap off. If this is the case, the cap is not needed.

In regards to the above comment I can’t relate to whats going on in this thread!

In regards to the OP, these amps need a ton more heat sink area for the two output transistors since ventilation is ZIP and adding a port to the cabinet will aid greatly in low end reproduction and to vent the cabinet if you place it near the top as I have done with these amps.

I place a small one in each upper corner.

Hello -

Yes. Lots of surplus AB watts trapped in a sealed and insulated box melts down predictably. Now currently under my bench awaiting attention is one mentioned in Aaron's thread on an excellent and hopefully near permanent solution to this --
