Great to hear that you found it!
Where I work among other things I QC up to 200 new microphones a month and about 3% of them come straight out of the factory with noisy resistors, so having new bad ones in a new kit I have to say I do not find unusual!
When I die, I want to go like my Grandfather did, peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming like the passengers in his car!

Cutting out a man's tongue does not mean he’s a liar, but it does show that you fear the truth he might speak about you!

Update to my Update!
So replacing some resistors did remove some hiss and make it tolerable, I just couldn't leave it alone. Since you guys helped me narrow the hiss down to the volume control and a bad component, I wondered if the silver mica cap on the pot itself could be part of the problem. Swapped it out with a coated ceramic disk of same value 100pF. BINGO!
Thanks to all of that offered me help and guidance! That hiss is now completely gone.

Good to know, yeah I've had some bad experience with those silver mica caps too, being noisy, problematic, microphonic, etc, and in both cases I swapped them with a ceramic and the issues were resolved.
